Pregnant with cramps?

September 25, 2007

I asked a question the other day about the cramps I'm getting, and Dr. Q suggested they were progesterone related. I found out today that I'm pregnant.. should I be concerned that I am having these cramps?

These cramps happen all the time in pregnancy, especially along the outer groin. Hang in there Meghan, if the cramps get more severe though, and you have a history of ectopics and/or PID, then visit a doc who can monitor you and once again...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!CONGRATULATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations, Meghan! Last week when I got my BFP, I was also feeling some cramps, a feeling that I normally get when I get my period. But by the end of the week, it was gone. I have not felt any cramps since then. I was also worried about it. Have a safe and healthy pregnancy!

That makes me feel a lot better. Yeah, I thought for sure the cramps were my period coming on.. but i realized I never had cramps like that UNTIL I was bleeding, not as PMS!!

Any idea what causes them?

There is so much going on in early pregnancy...so many changes taking place in our bodies. This is what I just read:

Cramps during early pregnancy are a common concern among many women and something that most women experience in their first weeks of being pregnant. Basically it is due to your body beginning to change and prepare itself for your growing baby.

During the very early stages of pregnancy it is possible for some women to feel a little bit of cramping when the egg that has been fertilized, attaches itself to the wall of the uterus. In many cases this can happen within 6-8 days after the egg has been fertilized. You can also experience some “spotting”, or very light bleeding when this happens as well.

Another factor that can create cramps during early pregnancy is from your uterus getting a message to begin expanding. Again, this is caused by your hormones signaling to the uterus to start getting ready for your baby. Most of the time these types of cramps feel nearly identical to what you might experience during your menstrual cycle. Although they may feel a little uncomfortable this is pretty normal in most all cases.

Cramping may also occur early on during pregnancy following sexual activity or when your bladder is completely full. Being pregnant and having to constantly urinate just goes hand in hand it seems.

When should you be concerned?

If you begin to have cramping that is teamed with heavy bleeding you need to call your doctor immediately. This could be a sign of many different issues that only your doctor can diagnose.
