pregnant light spotting

February 13, 2008

Hi Dr Q.

I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and I started spotting lightly a week and a half ago. After seeing my doctor about it he sent me to get a RhoGam shot since I am Rh negative and my husband is Rh positive. I received the shot yesterday and for intents and purposes the spotting seemed to have subsided but has returned. My doctor did an ultrasound yesterday and noticed a small spot on the placenta that was bleeding but was not worried because the baby is still growing at a normal rate. My back has also been a little achy as well. Please let me know your thoughts.

Also on another note, because of my insurance I had to wait to receive the Rhogam shot because the lab had to retest my blood for the type and rh factor and I was told that a specialist said that sometimes a woman can switch to a positive blood type while pregnant and that was the reason for retesting. Upon hearing this I thought it was the biggest bunch of bolonga I have ever heard. Please tell me if this is true.

Your pregannacy sounds ok, but only your doc can say so since he/she sees the ultrasound...Not likely (basically impossible) for one to switch blood type as one is genetically born this way...One easily has 3 days to receive the RhoGAM shot without consequence..

Dr. Q are you saying once you find out your pregnant cyou should get the shot withint 3 days?? I was a little confused on that. I am RH negative as well, and I know I need to get this shot, but of course my doctors office never has said a thing about it, but I know I am RH negative because my mom told me I was. So could this be why I miscarried at 5 weeks?? Or do you have longer to get that shot??

Thanks!!

Cynthia im wishing you loads of sticky glue and lots of love!!

February 13, 2008

i dont get that either cuz i have 2 children i am a - blood type my ex a + so i got the shot after the births of my kids and then after my miscarriage. My doc said it was only after a birth or a miscarriage cuz it will effect the next pregnancy not the first one - is that right?

February 13, 2008

oh, wait i think i also got the shot at about 16 weeks when i was pregnant but never early in the pregnancy.

February 13, 2008

get the shot before 3 days after u find out ur RH -ve

February 13, 2008

but what if you already know you are a -, then when do you get the shot?

My hubby now is the same blood type as my ex and i had 2 children no issues with my ex and a miscarriage with my new hubby, my blood isnt any different but didnt get the shot early in the pregnancies b4? Strange....

February 13, 2008

Wait so I should have gotten the shot after my miscarriage at 5 weeks??

I know im RH- but so is my neighbor and I think she got her shot around like 7 weeks pregnant on her first, and are trying for # 2 right now, and I think they will get it done around then as well, but im making sure thats not to long, because I know if you dont get it the body can think its an enemy and destroy it.

Im soo confused, on if I should have gotten it after the M/C...help please. Lots of love!

February 13, 2008

Also when she had a m/c in October she didnt get the shot either and she was like 5weeks 5 days or something...hmmm!

February 13, 2008

Chels u are right, moms and babies blood dont mix when preggo, during delivery it does and u get a shot after giving birth. Now, when ur preggo with the second, u already got the shot after the birth of the first. Im sorry for confusing yall. u can take the shot 3 days after any mixing of blood occurs. tahts the 72 hrs Dr Q mentioned. ITs given during pregnancy because placental tears may occur and just to be prepared.

Ok........here's the scope on Rh-.........the shot is only needed if you are bleeding at any point and at 26 weeks during pregnancy. Then I believe they also give you a shot during or after labor. It is to protect your next children from your own body fighting them off. If you conceieve again and that child is Rh+ your body sees that as a bad thing and tries to fight it off, but if you get the shot this doesn't happen. It all has to do with an Rh- person building up antibodies against Rh-. Hope this helps a little. As long as your doc knows you are Rh- they should do all the stuff that covers you for any future issues. Take care! Baby dust and sticky glue!

February 13, 2008

Girls I thought I'd share what was told to me from my obgyn. The rhogam shot is to protect your next pregnancy...not the present one.

February 13, 2008

Oh gotcha thanks!

So what about miscarriages at 5 weeks?? Should I have gotten that shot?? Im confused on that part. Im worried for this pregnancy hopefully coming this cycle :)

Thanks ladies, yall are the best...love yall!!!

Hi guys,

I wrote a little on the History on Rh- previously on this site...most likely due to Vasque ancentry...RhoGAM is given to protect the next pregnancy because it prevents the formation of Rh- antibodies during the present pregnancy that will attack the following pregnancy creating problems for the fetus (hydrops fetalis)

RhoGAM should be given at the beggining of the third trimester and at delivery routinely to all Rh- mothers that are pregnant (unless we know the father and/or infant is also Rh-). RhoGAM should also be given whenever there is vaginal bleeding to prevent transfusion of fetal/maternal blood which can create these antibodies and then make problems for subsequent pregnancies...

Hi all,

I just wanted to share. I had no problems with spotting during my first pregnancy. I received the RhoGAM shot at 28 weeks and then again after birth since my son's blood was rh+. I was also told that they give the shot if the pregnancy is going ok and even if you miscarry since the blood can mix. My sister also had trouble with her second pregnancy with spotting and received the shot early and was told that it is possible that the babys blood and travel back up the umbilical cord and mix with the mother's blood. Both of our doc's said it is better to be safe than sorry with this sort of thing. My sisters spotting stopped after receiving the shot. Mine seems to be lingering on. I have talked to other women who have the same thing and they said they bled the entire time with their second pregnancies.

Ok so another question from me again. I started spotting days before I miscarried, should I be concerned with that, when it was such an early miscarriage (5weeks). I dont want anything to happen to this next one that will be posting hopefully in a little over 2 weeks :)

Cynthia, really. Wow, bleeding the whole time. Great...haha. Im just soo concerned on if I should have gotten that shot, and if my best friend should have too, since hers was at like 5weeks 5 days.

Im going to talk to her and actually probably get her to call OUR doctor...haha, if he tells her she should have gotten it, then im going to call and say ok what about me.

Gosh this concerns me now, especially since I had spotting after we had sex while pregnant and then it went away and came back for like 3 days before full flow.

Thanks for the help ladies and thanks for making the post Cynthia!! Lots of love!!

I'm not sure if there are a certain number of weeks you have to be for the shot to be warranted. Maybe after the heart starts beating since you know there is blood circulating in the baby. I would definitely voice those concerns to your doctor so this time they can take every precaution. I hope everything works out for you this cycle. I'm sending lots of prayers and baby dust :) I'm glad so many people are benefiting from this post. It must have been a question on a lot of people's mind.

February 14, 2008

It truely has been a question on my mind, because I started thinking was I supposed to get that shot sooner...haha. Even last night I was like do they know im RH-, they have to after all the blood work I have done. Anyways so yes its always been on my mind, because I dont want my body to fight off a baby, gosh that would be horrible!! Im going to talk with my best friend and have her call because I call sooooo much, and she doesnt, since she doesnt have fertility problems, although they have been TTC #2 for a year now. We started about the same time. Anyways and so yes she had a M/C in October. So I wonder if she might need to have gotten the shot, even though she did get it during and after her pregnancy with her first.

Ahh I got another good post, about doing the Cord Blood thing, let me make that really quick....haha, I wonder if we can benefit from that even if we are RH-???

Thanks sweetie!!!!

February 14, 2008

Also I know the shot at delivery is for the next pregnancy and all, but does it have anything to do with that baby and stuff??

February 14, 2008

Are you talking about the RHO gram shot...You have to have it or you will build up antibodies and your body will try to fight off your next pregnacy...

February 14, 2008

Right I know that, but im concerned with the miscarriage I just had at 5 weeks. Im wondering if I should have gotten that shot.

I know that im supposed to get the shot during my 3rd trimester, and then again at birth, but I heard something about after miscarriages, and im wondering do they mean like after 7 weeks or whenever the heart starts to pump blood??? Or as early as 5weeks or so??

Im concerned!

February 14, 2008

It is someting that you need to ask your dr. I don't think they give it that early like you said it is in your 3rd trimester. So i think that you are okay but you should run it by your doctor. But I think that what you are talking about was too early to need the Rhogam shot.

February 14, 2008

Jolene that is something too look in to give your Dr a call and see what they say becasue you never know what may have happened..

February 14, 2008

Thanks sweetie, im going to wait and see what Dr. Q says, and then if he says I should have I will call my doctor. He will know, that for sure. I think its to early, but then again I dunno.

I just want to be sure, and then if I was supposed to get it well is it probably to late, I mean im about to ovulate here in the next few days.

Again I will wait and see what Dr. Q says, and then if he says to call I will.

Thanks sweetie!!!

February 14, 2008
