Pregnancy and High Blood Pressure...

April 01, 2008

A friend of mine is pregnant and was told by the doctor today that her blood pressure is high. He mentioned possible bed rest...does that usually help with this problem?

Dr Q any input?

Hey Sam, my 2 C worth..Bed rest is the firs step Drs want u to follow when u have high BP during preggo. Probably it was just moderately high that can be controlled by rest.

If its reasonably high(no protein in U/A though), the Dr would have Rx some pills that can be taken during pregnancy like beta blockers along with bed rest.

If it was pregnancy induced hypertension pre eclampsia with protein in the urine then the Dr would have given some Magnesium pills (there may be other pills too) and also bed rest. But for this, delivery is the only solution. So, if its not possible for delivery now, then bed rest and any pills as long as she can safely and then deliver the baby. Hope she feels better soon..
