When does the placenta take over the pregnancy? I am wondering because some women stop taking progesterone oil injections at 10 wks and others at 12.

This organ grows from the time of conception to eventually take over the production of hormones needed to sustain the pregnancy at around 12 weeks gestation (from your last menstrual period). It supplies your growing baby with a means of obtaining nutrients for development as well as a method of waste disposal. This is the only disposable organ ever made.

The placenta starts producing Progesterone at about 7-8wks, but it is not until 10wks when enough Progesterone is produced by the Placenta...some docs play it even more conservatively and continue til the 12th wk
