well dr.Q WHAT CAN BE MAKING ME MISS MY PERIOD IF MY TUBES ARE TIED?

July 27, 2008

You tubes have little to no relationship with your periods....

Testing needs to be done to see why you're missing periods, such as PCOS, and then treatment can be provided...

If pregnancy is desired, then tubal reversal or IVF are the choices

Your tubes shouldn't necessarily have any effect on your cycles

You should get testing done to make sure something else isn't causing you to miss your periods, such as PCOS

You can still be pregnant even with a history of tubal ligation. You should get checked for this as soon as possible to assure that it is not in the tube. If you are not pregnant then you may be having some hormonal issues that are interfering with your menstruation.

did you have your tubes tied or cut and burned?

PCOS is a condition where you dont ovulate each month. INstead of ovulating the follicle it ends up as a cyst. Its difficult to get preggo since you have no idea when you will ovulate and you dont have a period every 28 days - more like months go by without a period.

Also your body produces more of the male hormones than the female hormones hence why women with PCOS has a hard time ovulating.

July 29, 2008

is that why most are a bit more hairy angie? They produce more testosone?

July 29, 2008

PCOS is defined by 3 criteria:

1. Ovulatory abnormalities, ie irregular periods

2. High androgen levels (androgens are hormones that are typically higher in men, causes hair growth and builds muscle, thickens the voice...)

3. Polycycstic appearing ovaries on ultrasound

If a 2 out of the 3 criteria are present, the diagnosis of PCOS is made. Other conditions that could mimic PCOS would also need to be ruled out before the diagnosis is made.

So to answer the above question, women with PCOS could have increased hair growth because of increased testosterone and other androgen levels.

You need some blood tests to 1. rule out pregnancy, as you could be pregnant even if your tubes are tied, 2. TSH to assess your thyroid function, 3. Prolactin, and other hormonal evaluation. You would need to seek care with your Ob-Gyn or your REI.
