Perimenopause or pregnancy?

November 02, 2007

ok. For the first time in my menstrual life, I am confused about whether i am pregnant or not. here is a little about my history.

I am 42.8 years old. I have a 3.4 year old which I conceived naturally without trying much. A year ago, my husband and I decided to try again. My doctor suggested an hsg and estradiol test. hsg was 5.9 and estradiol was <20. Despite the good results, we were not getting pregnant. At the same time, my periods went from 28 day cycles to 25, with ovulation on the 17th day of my cycle. so, i went to a fertility specialist who ordered additional tests. my husband's test was fine and mine too. but an hsg showed one blocked tube. my doctor performed a laparoscopy and cleared the tube. he started me on 50 mg of clomid and monitored me every month for cysts. clomid moved my ovulation from cd 17th to 14th day, and my cycles increased to 26 days or so.

At my 3 cycle of clomid i got pregnant but unfortunately miscarried. it was a "missed abortion" so we had to perform a d & c. This happened about 5 months ago.

i took me 6 weeks to get my period after the d & c. at my first period after the d & c, we did not try to conceive and was not on clomid. on my second cycle i took clomid days 3-7, got my period on cycle day 26. my period was heavy though.

this last cycle, I think i ovulated sometime between day 14-16 of my cycle. i had very stretchy cervical mucus and lower abdominal cramping (my usual ovulation symptoms). but opk tests performed on days 11-13 of my cycle showed negative. an opk on the morning of day 14 of my cycle showed a slight line but according to the test, a slight line is NOT a positive.

My husband and I had intercourse on CD 14 of my cycle. I expected my period yesterday but nothing. I've had nausea which started 5 days after ovulation until now. my breasts are slightly sensitive. unfortunately, i have not taken my bbt lately so have no idea of my temperatures.

i had a pregnancy test today and yesterday (expected day of my period) but all the test were negative. could it be that I did not ovulate? Am I perimenopausal or pregnant?

hi imbpanama,

welcome to fertilityties :) we hope you learn alot by searching through this site and by asking others...

It is unclear whether you ovulated this month, but slightly sensitive breasts are a good sign, but without a positive OPK, doesn't sound too good either...

At 42, the perimenopausal state starts in some people, and missing periods can be a common occurance. In fact, spontaneous pregnancies at this age are very uncommon to be truthful and you should speak with your RE more about this as unfortunately fertility is dropping fast at these ages to possibly more aggressive with treatments, such as IVF...

Good luck, and keep us posted...
