PCOS and trying to conceive

I got diagnosed with PCOS, 3 weeks ago today, and I have been taking the news hard. My periods have been very irregular since getting off the pill at the begining of March. I had a period on April 20th for a few days, then one on May 30th for a few days, and then bled just a little bit on June 27th (but only lasted for a few hours, wasnt even enough for a tampon, and then went away). Then had a period on July 27th lasting for several days. I havent had one since, and im on day 45 of my cycle. My last cycle, from what the doctors said was 60 days, because the bleeding on June 27th, they dont believe was a period.

They said they do not think I have ovulated at all since getting off the pill. They did a transvaginal ultrasound, the day that my gyno did my pap, and felt that he thought I may have a cyst on one of my ovaries, but come to find out from the ultrasound, that I def. have Polycystic ovaries, and I even saw them to know that is for sure what I have.

I called my doctor today, because for the past months I get cramps off and on, but never get a period. I want to know if I should go ahead and get put on medication or not yet. Im just ready to get pregnant, and hopefully have a healthy pregnancy, and then get put on that IUT thing, until we are ready to have baby #2, several years later.

I just need advice on what to do?? Im hoping the doctors will go ahead and put me on medication, for as I have not started a period since July, nor ovulated and Im just so emotional, because I am 22 and have always been VERY healthy. I am 5'3 and weight 145, and im going to try and lose like 10-20 pounds, while on medicine or not. Also if I do get prescribed to medicine, do you think Pre-Seed would be a good thing to take when I ovulate, to increase our chances?

Sorry so long, im just soo confused, and soo upset, and at the same time trying not to stress about it, because all I keep telling myself is thank goodness I found out young!

Thank you for your time, and advice, I cant wait to hear back from you!

Dear jolene,

I am not a doctor, just a regular reader in this site and I like Dr q's advices to women like us who have problems. I find it very encouraging to read his comments.

Good news is PCOS is treatable in many cases. Do not worry. There are medicnies like provera which induces your period then you have chlomid/metformin to help you ovulate. I was diagnosed with PCOS last year, but I lost 25 lbs because dr. told me to do so and then it went away by its own and I started having regular periods. I am not sure about Pre-seed.You are so young..So, dont worry..Lose some weight, it helps you so much. Dont worry..one way or the other you will have a baby thanks to the advancement in medical science. Just excercise, eat healthy and relax. Everything will work out for the better.

Thank you very much for you answer, as it was helpful. I am going to try and lose weight, but the thing is im not overweight, and I normally eat very healthy. Im going to start jogging soon though, so hopefully that will help shed about 5 pounds or so. Im just scared about these cramps, and then sometimes I get really sharp pains that make my eyes water, but go away and dont hurt afterwards.

Im just confused on what to do, and the doctor told me to call back in a month if nothing has changed, and nother has changed as of 3 weeks. Do you think getting put on medicine now is bad?? Thanks again for your advice and help.

Hi Jolene,

Did you talk to your doctor about these cramps? I have never experienced menstural cramps in my life so i am not sure how it feels like. I am 5'4 and 145 and my doc said this is ok, but would like to see me around 138 Lbs. i was 169 Lbs when I had PCOS issues. Your doctor is the best judge to see if you can go on medication. Since you are so young, may be you can ask your doctor what you can do to conceive naturally, or if you are in a hurry like me, then ask her if its safe to have medications. But do tell her abt these cramps.

I left a message with my doctors nurse today, and im waiting for her to call me back. I let them know about the cramps, and that im on day 45. I want to try and get to 130-135. Hopefully it would go away then. I just want to get pregnant so bad, and cant wait. Plus I want to get these cysts to go away and get back to a normal period.

Congrats on losing the weight tho. How long did it take, and what did you do to lose weight? I lost about 25 pounds several years back, but it was because I gained a lot of weight getting off the pill then, and once I got back on I lost weight. Now knowing it was my polycystic ovaries, that caused it.

Talk to you soon, and thanks.

how i lost weight : excercise atleast 2 times a week, completely stopped coke, sugar, coffee, high carb food. no fries, donuts. It just melted away. It took abt 4 months to shed that weight. I wasnt excercising really that much to be honest. I was addicted to coke and krispy kreme lol. All those triglycerides. I have always been normal weight and regular in periods.2006 was just a bad year for me. i was on BCP for 3 months to regularise the period and ever since its been good. My doc told me sudden weight changes may cause you to not ovulate. Thats what happened in myn case. ITs because of the weight I ended up not ovulating and irregular and all that.

I talked to the doctor and they they to put me on provera (or something) and I have to take it for I believe 10 days. They also put me on Clomid, which I will take 5 days after I start my period. Hopefully this helps me get back on track.

Gotcha. Yeah I dont drink anything with sugar, nor eat anything with lots of sugar. Thats how I did mine years ago, and then till this day I cant eat things with lots of sugar, it makes me sick. I eat pretty healthy, but I think I need to just job, and lift some small weights, and stuff. Im just hoping that this medicine helps, and I get back to normal, and pregnant, and back on birth control.
