PCOS and Metformin

September 02, 2007

Hi, I'm 32, diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago. I've been on 1000mg of Metformin since July. I've managed to lose some weight, but no period and I've been charting, and no Ovulation. Here in Canada, I don't know if we have REs, I've been going to a OBGYN. She hasn't done really any testing, but just guessed that I had PCOS, I agreed with her.

She wants me to stay on Met. for 2 more months and then she will consider Clomid. I'm just really frustrated and wish that I could so something instead of just sitting and waiting.

Im on CD 35 and on FF it looked like I might have ovulated on Day25 because I had a temp rise, but no crosshairs. I tried a preg test 2 days ago, it was negative. OPKs are always negative too.

What else can I do besides just wait? Could I still ovulate and will it be a new cycle or do I keep counting?

There must be something else I can do to help ovulate. Thanks!

Dear Odaisydukeo, Heres my story. My ob-gyn told just by looking at me that I have PCOS. I didnt agree with her because I was in denial. How can someone tell I have PCOS by just looking at me. An experienced doctor can do that. Finally I got some tests done and I did have some insulin resistence. I reduced my weight around 20 pounds and got back my periods. The doc told that I may not even need medication if I lose weight. But i did not get preggers. So, I seeked help again. I visited my Ob-Gyn again and I insisted I want all the tests taken. Finally she said she will put me on Metformin (I am 5'5" and 146 Lb) But I do have early stages of Insulin resistence. She says that Metformin is an excellent drug for people who have Insulin resistence and PCOS and that it will help get pregnent. I am considering asking if I can take clomid too. So, from my personal experience, I would ask you to consider taking the Glucose Tolerence test, DHEAS, LH, FSH, Prolactin, Estredol, Free and Total Testosterone to find out if you really need Metformin or any other medication. I got these tests done this time in addition to 170H Progesterone and a few other harmonal tests. I asked my doc to request a P4 Progesterone test to know if I ovulated that month or not. Ask your doctor if she can do that for you. I do hope you do have insurance to cover these tests. Thanks to internet and websites like fertilityties we are empowered with the knowledge to know more about PCOS and the various treatments. Good luck to you and I hope you will have good news to tell us all soon.

Dear Odaisydukeo, Also, ask your doctor to check if your thyroid is normal. (get your TSH levels tested).

Hi Odaisy,

Yeah, for the most part, the docs in the fertility clinics will be able to help. It's a start and would go from there...

Ok thanks. I am scheduled to see my dr. in October for Clomid. I'm on 1000 mg of Met, I was hoping she would put it up, but she didnt'. I also read about taking soy as a natural alternative to Clomid, but I still have no AF and no O after 50 days on Met. I didn't want to have to go to a fertility clinic as I live about 2 hours from any of them.
