PCOS and after birth..Treatment...Dr Q recommendations!!

June 27, 2008

Dr Q I have a question.. I have PCOS and my hormones before i lost weight were really bad..i had high LH i know that much but not sure about anything else..The RE said my baseline LH is that everyday of ovualating person.

I know that after i have these babies my appetite is gonna go right back to normal so i know i will have to control that..and diet..but what do you recommend so that i will not have the hormone problem as i had before after i give birth incase i decide to try for another baby..Like what can i do to manage it in the mean time..i plan to go on birth control pills after giving birth just to regulate my cycels..

Thanks so much

can i get some of the drug? I dont have PCOS tho????? Does it help everyone lose weight or just PCOS and diabetes people?

My Dr has told me Metformin can be taken by non diabetic ppl as well for general well being. metformin by itself does not cause weight loss, Its more from the side effects of nausea and loss of appetite etc

what does it do for people hope?

Chels what is does is it helps your body use insuin properly..in pcos patients they are insulin resistant meaning that the cells are resistant to insulin and can hot receive glucose for energy..so what happens is your body store fat for energy that is why pcos patients are heavier because their body needs to store that fat to use for energy..the metformin helps you use the insulin and there fore you do not store as much fat..and this may contribute to weight loss also with the side effects

But i would not recommend taking metformin unless you have a medical need for it because it can drop your weight pretty quickly and also it can lower your sugar levels and have them all over the place.i was taking too much for my body weight and my sugars were up and down..and if i didd not eat enough i would have an episode or where my sugar would go really low...so when i went to an re and they did a complete blood work he lowered me to two a day and then i moved my self down to one a day because the side effects were just that bad..and the bllod sugars being out of control were the worse..LOL

A great weight loss regimen which is also spectacular for the baby is breastfeeding

Metformin and other meds can be given by docs, and in young people, quite unusual for sugar levels to drop noticeably as the body is very resilient...but always best to go by your doc's recommendation as generic recommendations may not be right for an individual person

The basic rule of thumb is that breastfeeding expends many calories, hence the ease in losing weight...

However, if one's caloric intake still superseeds this expendiature, then no weight loss will be noted
