PCOS usually has its roots in adolescant years. Childhood obesity and rapid weight gain around the time of puberty are risk factors. The prevanlence of PCOS does decrease with age and gets less into the late 30 and into the 40's.
If you were on bcp, it is possible that the signs and symptoms of pcos were being masked by the pills. Hence, the pills brought on a regular menstrual cycle every month, but once you got off of them, the cycles became irregular.
