PAP prior to IVF

July 22, 2008

Doctor, I was wondering why I needed a PAP prior to IVF? Additionally, what if they find something? Will they not do the procedure?? Thank you!

It is important to have annual screening done for cervical cancer especially if you are at high risk. Due to the fact, that once you are pregnant you will most likely not have a pap smear for approximately a year, some physicians will perform a pap at the time of your fertility evaluation. Depending on the result sometimes this may delay treatment if further therapy needs to be performed. It is best to take care of everything before the cycle gets started.

Great! Thank you. So, it sounds like if a pap is abnormal that it MAY delay treatment (depending on what causes the abnormal PAP smear) but it doesn't disqualify you from receiving IVF treatment forever.

I have a list of things that must be done before doing IVF and the PAP is standard procedure if not done within one year. I also had to have the PAP done when I 1st began fertility evaluation but it was almost time for my annual eval anyway. Good luck!
