Painting While Pregnant!

August 16, 2008

Ok its the question I have to have an answer to, as some say its ok as long as its a well ventilated area, with a mask and a low fume paint (olympic paint is very low in fumes). Is it safe to paint during pregnant?

Im 26weeks pregnant today, and of course im not getting on ladders or anything, but I will have all the windows open in the house and be wearing a white mask like doctors wear. I just cant take not being able to do a thing around the house, and we just moved into a brand new house and one thing I wanted badly was all the rooms painted.

Thanks in advance, hubby was doing this for me and still will, he is very hesitant to let me until he sees its basically safe!

Thanks so much!

I personally wouldn't do it with the regular white mask, this won't do anything for the fumes. You need to get a gas mask!

That is funny, I was going to ask the same question when I saw you just posted it.. We are moving to our house end of Sept and I want to get the rooms painted also...

Im hearing so many different answers from nurses and doctors and stuff, most saying as long as the room is well ventilated and fans are on and stuff you are fine, and as long as you wear a basic mask.

We have 6 windows open downstairs with fans blowing right now, but havent started to paint yet.

I dont know what to do as well one room was painted somewhat last night by hubby with windows open and fans blowing.

I dont want the painting to be done when Noah arrives thats for sure.

It's fine as long as you're not taking in the fumes. My worry for you is that the white mask won't do anything.

August 16, 2008

That's what my dr said too, as long as the room is well ventilated, but i wanted to be extra cautious. Plus i hate the smell of paint lol.

skin? i don't think so. :)

There is no way I can leave the house for days while the painting is being done thats for sure. These paints now a days especially Olympic are low VOC or zero. Which is what people are saying is fine during pregnant, so long as its a well ventilated room.

The baby does come first always and forever, but you can do everything to the book like I have been and something be wrong, or do nothing to the book and have a healthy baby. Im not saying im putting Noah in harms way, but there is no way we can leave for days while hubby paints the house while im pregnant or when he is born.

Here is some comments off an aricle on baby center on painting during pregnant now a days.

These days, almost every paint company has a low/no VOC (low odor, non-toxic) paint. My favorite is Benjamin Moore's Eco Spec paint. Almost every Benjamin Moore color is available and the paint is high quality so you use less coats and it is very durable. I am just recently pregnant but I still used it throughout my entire house. I was so surprised that even when it was wet, it didn't smell at all. Stay away from any products that have more than 50 g/L VOC like stains & polyurethanes. Unfortunately, unless a product is Low VOC, it may be hard to find out the VOC content. Just ask your local paint store - if they don't know right away, they can easily find out. Check out Bioshield products as well - they have a great line of stains and sealers that are all-natural and Zero VOC that actually hold up well. So, you can paint & stain - just be informed about the products you use.

fumes won't get in through your skin. you should obviously wear gloves and whatnot.

I read that it can go in skin but they dont know how much if any. I have painted for years and well one never wore masks or had windows open and never felt sick, because I use low VOC paints which is basically what all paints are now a days. Now that its nice here and all windows can be open and I can get hubbys masks that has the filter in the front of it, I dont see it being a problem.

I would really like to hear a doctors opinion on this because again im hearing it from nurses and stuff that its fine as long as the paint is low VOC and its well ventilated, and wearing a mask, and I will put on paints and a long sleaved shirt if I have too, and would be taking a TON of breaks.

But even if I didnt paint and hubby does I cant leave for days on end. He sucks at painting and would take FOREVER, and im sure as heck not paying someone to do it, we dont pay for labor.

August 16, 2008

I hear you on not paying for labor lol :)

Idk i've been painting for a few weeks and I feel fine...

Also we arent using oil bases, its water based. Im just so confused, as I am putting Noah first or I wouldnt be asking this question, but at the same time, how can it be done when he is born, because we will be here all day. I just dont know, this is one subject I really just dont know about.

I do everything to the book, but there isnt a lot of evidence out there on this. Plus heck its good excercise.

August 16, 2008

angel where did you read that? id like to see it.

August 16, 2008

I could see if you started to feel sick and what not, thats what I have read as well, but I just honestly cant seeing it doing harm with a ton of windows open, plus getting a fan that sits on the floor that will blow the fumes out the window on top of having fans on.

Im just so lost! I hate not being able to do much, there is so much that needs to be done before he gets here.

August 16, 2008

You could give a try and see how you feel.

August 16, 2008

Jolene I know there are some very low toxen paints and in a VERY well ventalated room I think you'd be fine.

August 16, 2008

It basically just says wear gloves and long sleeved stuff just in case, there is no theory that it gets in through the skin. Now im so freaked out and on the verge of crying because I want this done, since well there are paint samples already painted on the walls, and no way I can leave all day long for nights or days, and I dunno.

August 16, 2008

I think so too, I really wish Dr. Q or one of the other docs was on to answer this, as I know so many preggos would love to know the answer, because well who doesnt want the nursery painted, and now being afraid of even being in the house, but most articles say its fine as long as ventilated are, and I think having 6 windows open in the downstairs is pretty darn ventilated.

August 16, 2008

Jolene when the painting is done keep the windows open and close the door..maybe put a towel to close up the crack at the bottom then sleep on another level with windows open..that could maybe work?

August 16, 2008

I could see there would be some absorbtion through the skin if you get the actual paint on your skin, i don't believe that it can breathe in the fumes.

Jolene don't cry! Most sites and my dr say it's fine!
