Overweight + No Period + chance of PCOS = No baby?
Hey all, my name is Amanda and I am from the Philly, PA area. I am 23 years old and have been married for a year. I have a question. My husband and I have been trying to conceive, but I have been unable to get pregnant. I very rarely get my periods, and it has always been irregular since I have had it. I am also approximately 100 pounds overweight and smoke (Even though I don't smoke much and I'm quitting ASAP). When I was younger (in my teens) my mom made me get two abortions at 16 and 17 years of age (I was significantly alot skinnier, like 180-190 lbs) and then at age 19 I started to get symptoms of PCOS even though I was never officially diagnosed. Will I ever be able to get pregnant? Have any of you ever had these same exact issues, but overcame them and was ultimately able to conceive? I would go to the doctors but unfortunately at the moment I am unemployed helping out a sick relative and I am unsure in how much it would cost for a visit. I would appreciate any sort of feedback in how I can change to increase the odds in my getting pregnant in the future. Thank you!

I have a history of breast cancer 7 years ago and part of the treatment was to put me into menopause. Probably due to lack of hormones and depression I gained 40-50 lbs over 4 years. Once I was done I started trying to lose weight. My periods were very irregular once they came back but as I lost weight it helped. Even though I have suffered two miscarriages, once I hit a healthy weight (I lost 30 lbs of it) I got pregnant. It's also important to stop the smoking which you said you are trying to do which is awesome. I did weightwatcher's online and it was great. I wish you luck!!!
Hi Amanda,
From the symptoms you have mentioned, it looks like you might have PCOS (irregular periods, excess weight). I too have irregular periods, and have had them since I was a teen. I started gaining weight around 18 or 19 yrs and have been overweight ever since. After my marriage my gyn gave me some tests and it was confirmed I had pcos. And I am in the process of ttc.
Weight loss looks like the best alternative to this problem. In some cases as little as 5% of your weight loss can also help in conceiving. With your history of two pregnancies, it is clear you can get pregnant. Whats stopping is the pcos and its root cause is weight.
I am struggling with my weight loss but would suggest you to try doing that and I am sure it will bring you success.
Best of luck and keep all posted!!
