Over 35 and Not Pregnant

April 07, 2008

I am 37 years old, and my husband and I are TTC. I'm worried as to why I'm not pregnany yet. We've been trying now for four months. I take my temperature, monitor my ovulation, chart, etc. I haven't been on BC in years, and I've never been pregnant either. I'm feeling concerned. Would you recommend that I make a visit to my OB/GYN now, rather than waiting year? I don't have much time.

I would definitely go see an ob/gyn or an re as time is of the essence for you b/c of your age. I don't even think a dr. would tell you to wait a year before seeing someone. You may want to take a more aggressive approach than to just try by the wait and see method. Good luck, i hope you are blessed with a child very soon! Tons of BabyDust to you.

Hi Tracey,

The general recommendation is 6 months of TTC for women aged 35 or more.

But if I were you, irrespective of whether ur periods are normal or not, I would see a Reproductive Endocrinologist (fertility specialist). They are specialists and way better and aggressive (depending on how u want) than an Ob-Gyn.

Good luck to u

Thank you all for the advice. The thing that really boggles me is that my period is always, and I mean ALWAYS on time rain or shine. I will definitely step things up and look up a fertility specialist.

Tracy,

I am 36 and have been TTC for almost 1 year. I too have been monitoring my ovulation days and my husband and I have both done several tests that have come back normal and still no luck. I have also been using clomid 50mg for three months. I have read that it can take up to a year but when you are our age you should seek assistance from a fertility specialist after 6 months because it could take longer and we would be wasting time. I waited almost 9 months before going to a FE (was given clomid from my ob/gyn) and I wish I had done so sooner!!!

Here is a link with some info and below is a sentence from it:

http://babymed.com/faq/Content.aspx?14372 (You can do a search for this info on this site and on the internet)

"If you haven't got pregnant after a year of trying (six months if you are over 35), you may want to talk with your doctor about your options."

WISHING YOU LOTS AND LOTS OF LUCK!!!!

Have u got the partner tetsed? Semen analysis? U would be surprised to know how many couples have a hard time conceiving because of male fertility factor.

April 07, 2008

HopeN,

I thought about this and discussed with my husband. Bottom line, we need to step things up. After having sex consistently while ovulating, the waiting afterwards is just grueling and when that PT is not positive, talk about a let down! It takes the wind out of our sails big time. Would you recommend a Urologist, or plain old Internist for my husband? Or would a fertility specialist be able to guide us on what to do for my spouse???

April 07, 2008

JenStar, thanks for the link. I will be reading it!

April 07, 2008

Thanks Hope, I did and he was good. Tracy did you?

So far all tests have come back good so we aren't sure what is going on. If I get AF in the next few days I will do FSh and two other tests on day 2-3 of my cycle and then try shots with IUI. Do you remember if you by any chance had any spotting before you would have gotten your AF the month you found out you were preggo??

April 07, 2008

Hi Tracey, a good old fertility specialist would do the basic Seman analysis where the hubby needs to drop off the specimen. If all is good, then no more Dr visits for the hubby.

I totally understand how u feel, TTC consumes our lives and controls it good or bad. Dont be let down. An RE's primary role is to try to get u preggo. So, try and see an RE and take it from there.

April 07, 2008

Tracy,

The fertility specialists (FE) can send you where to go for the sperm test. My husband actually did it in their office. He said it was the most embarrassing thing he ever did- but it was well worth it, knowing he was good.

April 07, 2008

JenStar, hubby and talked it about maybe a few days ago. He hasn't had his semen analyzed just yet. But, I'm on the search for an RE.

April 07, 2008

Good luck!!!! Keep us posted :O)

April 07, 2008

JenStar, it's so funny you should say that. My husband was like, how am I supposed to get aroused at the doctor's office. He had this blank stare on his face. PRICELESS! I told him there may be a way he can drop his speciman off instead of having to give it in the office!!!

April 07, 2008

Tracey Yes there are options, but its best to do it at the office lol. Sometimes it may stress out the hubby so thats the only thing he needs to watch out to not get a low result. U can do it @ ur home and drop it off, but u need to ensure certain precautions r taken care off. Theres a whole bunch of things like shud be dropped off in a certain time, shud be warm, shud be this that..So, make sure to talk to ur Dr abt this.

April 07, 2008

HopeN, I never looked at it that. Yeah, giving the speciman at the office will be much better. I will keep everyone posted.

Ladies, as promised, I told I'd give you an update. I took a HPT this morning and it was positive!!!!! I was blown away. I made an appt with my OB GYN. I am having some cramping though. It feels like my period is going to start, but it has not, which prompted me to take the test! I can't believe!! All the charting, BBT, etc has paid off.
