not ovulating

August 13, 2007

Hello,

Prior to this year (March) I was on the birth control patch for two years and the pill for 7 years prior to that. I am currently trying to concieve however there is no physical sign that I am ovulating. I have bought quite a few ovulation tests. I have not mastered the basal tempature chart yet but I cannot see a rise or decline in my temps. Is there a test the doctors can do to see if I am actually ovulating each month? When would they do it? and what would it consist of?

Thank you

Hi Allison,

Very few patients can actually master BBTs as they require special attn that you can look up under this site. The OPKs I still consider the best test for ovulation since when it turns positive, you can time things perfectly to have the sperm there ready for the egg the day before ovulation. Otherwise, a Progesterone blood test done 7 days after ovulation would be the next best thing...(but how do we know when the 7 days are if my OPK isn't positive?), nice question I threw in there myself and the answer is...yep, kind of hard to gauge. If you're periods that are somewhat predictable, get the blood test 7 days before your expected period and then this will tell you (you can read more about this on this site)

If you have no real good sign of ovulation and/or you aren't getting your periods, then would suggest you visit a doc who can rx clomid or other meds to get you ovulating.

Thank you very very much.

The first day of my last period was July 30, I believe I have a 27 day cycle. Should I see if they can set me up for a blood test next week?

Thank you again

Next week is perfect since you would expect your period to arrive August 26th, get your Progesterone level checked on the 19th (7 days before your expected period) and that will be great

So I called to set up the appointment and I was told I have not been trying long enough to have lab work done and I should stop worrying. My questions are:

Is this the typical response?

I know I have not ovulated since I have been off of birth control, will my body start ovulating by itself?

or will it need help now?

Should I seek another doctor?

Am I over worrying?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Allison, I feel your frustration. You and I are in the same boat. I also got off the pill in March and am now trying to determine why it is that I am not ovulating. I actually have not had a period on my own since. My doc put me on Provera for 3 cycles and still no Ovulation. I have been using OPKs to test the whole month through just in case and have been charting my BBT. I know how frustrated you feel because my husband and I are really wanting a child. It is nice to know that someone out there has a very similar story to mine.

Hi Liane,

Did the dr tell you that you might start ovulating normally? It is so frustrating. I feel like they are not hearing me.

Thank you

The doctor keeps telling me to be patient and give it time and that eventually it will start on its own but that it could take up to 2 years. I don't want to wait that long. He keeps telling me that I am young enough and that there is no rush. As far as I am concerned that is my decision not his. I am actually in the process of getting set up to see an OBGYN and seeking out another opinion. It scares me to think that maybe something is wrong or that I have PCOS. I don't have any PCOS symptoms other than irregular cycles but Dr. Q thinks that it's a good chance I have it. My husband does his best to listen and understand but it isn't him going through it so he doesn't understand why it bugs me so much. It is hard when you want a child so badly...it scares me to think of never getting a chance to be a mommy. What about you? What have the doctors been telling you?

August 17, 2007

She gave me some speal that I am still a baby (30 yrs old) and that I need to be patient and not think about it and not stress about it and it will just happen. What worries me is not knowing why my body just all of a sudden stopped ovulating. When did this happen, what caused it to happen. Now I wonder if something is wrong. Thanks for listening

August 17, 2007

That is exactly how my doctor treats me and exactly how I feel. They don't understand what it feels like when you know your system is out of whack but not sure why or how to fix it. If I knew that I was ovulating and things were ok then I wouldn't be worried about it. If that was the case I would be more optimistic and I would believe that in time it would happen. I don't know when I quit ovulating or if I ever really did. I have been on the pill for enough years that this could have been going on for years and I wouldn't have even known. It scares me. It sure is nice to have someone to talk to who really understands.

I'm logging off for the weekend, maybe next week at some point we can catch up and see if either of us have any more progress or tips for each other.

Have a great weekend and Thanks again.

I think that would be a great idea. I am going to see the OBGYN next thursday so I hope she has some answers for me. Thanks again for listening.

Hi Guys,

Liane, I'm so happy you're going to see an Ob/Gyn because if you're not ovulating, you're not producing an egg, and if not producing an egg, well then, how are you going to get pregnant? It baffles me at times that some docs out there don't get this general concept (but they're usually not Ob/Gyns or RE so can't blame them too much)

Rest assured that both of your prognosis remains good and we just have to find you someone who's willing to help you ovulate consistently, and simple Clomid can do that (combined with Metformin even better if you have PCOS). You have to remember that you can ask your doctor for these medications if you're not ovulation (I don't remember the last time Clomid was compared to an abused/addictive drug like many that are out there :). Go ahead, ask for this, better yet, tell your doc you've been checking BBTs correctly and checking OPKs, moreso the reason for your doc to act on the fact you're not ovulating and then your doc can either give you something to help or refer you to a specialist that can.

Thanks for the advice Dr.Q. Thing is I wouldn't be lying because I have been doing all of those things. If this OBGYN isn't wanting to help me like my MD then I will seek a third opinion if need be. I know my body and I know that right now it needs a good kick of Clomid because otherwise as of right now there will be no baby for us. Thanks again Dr.Q...it sure is too bad that you do your doctoring so far away from where I live...I would love to have you as my doctor. You are understanding and willing to listen to what we have to say and that in itself says a lot about you. Thanks.

You're welcome Liane, but I think it's our little FertilityTies community we have here that gives everyone a voice and advice that'll allow each user to take further control of their fertility by helping and listening to each other

wow i have been looking for this conversation for the longest time, i to am in the same situation. i have been off my nuva ring for the past 3 months and still don't think im ovulating i've been buying the anwsers at home ovulation test and they also say that im not currently ovulating???

What do I do?

my husbands in the air force and their hospitol is very strict, and im not so sure if they'll help me after only been trying for 3 months???

What do you think i should do???

PLEASE HELP???

September 07, 2007

Hi Jess,

You should fist be examined by your doc to see if there's a medical reason you're not ovulating, say PCOS. Then, you must express your desires to get pregnant and let them know "why wait a year of not ovulating, which means I definately won't get pregnant during that time" and simply request treatment for you to start ovulating and have periods again *(it's not like you're already ovulating and we're asking you to wait a year to see if get pregnant). Any reasonable doc should follow this logic and you should be helped.
