no period, not ovulating, have two kids and want more!

June 03, 2008

I am a 30yr old, who until last year, had normal healthy periods all my life and two easy pregnancies. I went 1yr without a period due to heavy marathon training. Other marathons in previous years were not as intense and did not affect my period. I tried provera (took two cycles) in the winter. Bled 3 months (31-35 days apart) in Feb-April but am almost certain I didn't ovulate. Blood work on hormones and thyroid came back normal. Slightly increased the running recently and once again, no period after 49 days and on provera again!! Ahhh!! I am certain I am not- and haven't been- ovulating.

I would love more kids at any time. But I'd at least like to be able to run and ovulate still. I do NOT want a BCP that will pump me with hormones, keep me from ovulating anyhow, and give me a fake period.

Am I a good candidate for Clomid?

Hi Stephanie and Welcome!

Given your scenario, you most likely have a diagnosis of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism...In these cases, Clomid may not help you ovulate as by the mechanism in which it works may not be effective for you...

You can ovulate and achieve a pregnancy however through the use of injectable gonadotropins, and an RE can administer these for you...you can find an RE near you using this site...

Good luck, and keep us posted...

Of note, if you're not planning on getting pregnant, it is key to take some form of estrogen for bone protection and growth with occasional withdrawal bleeds under the supervision of your doc

I want to get pregnant within the next year. I did some research on the disorder and it seems the cause is likely exercise-induced hypothalamic amenorrhea. I also read that as you said, Clomid may not work at all.

With the injections, how likely is it I will return to normal and be able to conceive? Do I need to stop running? Have you heard of acupuncture working to resume menses?

Thanks for listening! Love to heaer anything else you have to add.
