Newly diagnosed PCOS

July 18, 2008

Hello, My husband and I had been ttc toward the end of last year (around September??) Then come January I had no menstrual cycle I thought FOR SURE I was pregnant! February... Still nothing... March.. Nothing... No positive HPT and went to the doctor on two seperate occasions for a blood test and both came back negative. I had no menstrual cycle for about 7 months when finally I went to a new doctor and they did an ultrasound and was finally diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian syndrome. Just thought I would post and see if anyone has any advice for me or stories/pictures what ever that they would like to share. I am trying to stay positive, but as I'm sure many of you know it is already an emotional rollercoaster. Right now I am on Metformin and have been put on birth control to try and regulate my cycle before we begin any kind of fertility. Any advice/suggestions/stories GREATLY appreciated!

REnee, ur situation seems very similar to mine. I started TTC Dec 2005 and from that very month my periods almost stopped. I thought I was preggo, but just -ve. So, I was diagnosed me with PCOS Aug 2006 when I finally saw a Dr in Aug 2006. The Dr advised me to lose weight and put me on BCP for 3 months. I lost all the excess about 35 lbs and then I went for a retest Aug 2007 when to my surprise my HCG test came +. I am not saying all PCOS women are overwieght, Insulin resistance is thought to be a contributing factor. So, if you are overweight, consider losing weight and also talk to ur Dr about Clomid, Femara to help u ovulate. Good Luck!

I started getting my periods after 3 months on BCP when I had already lost around 10 lbs. Aug 2007 all my PCOS results came -ve and was also preggo

I have actually become over weight just in the last few years. I just couldn't lose it and didn't understand why...now I know. Thank you for the advice. Right now I am just trying to be strong and get through this. It helps knowing that I am not alone and there ARE success stories out there.

Ditto. I have never been overweight. Job stress long wrk hrs etc I put on all the weight in about 12 months period. Once I lost it, everythings back to normal. I was given no choice. My Ob said I need to lose the weight and see her. She is the best. She didnt Rx meds coz I asked. Oh yeah believe me, if u never had menstural issues and just recently, weight loss is the key. Im sure Metformin with all its bad side effects gonna make u lose weight. I stopped taking any form of sugar and carbs if that helps

HopeN what all did you do to loose weight? I am also PCOS and I understand both stories. I know I am overweight and so I need serious help.

Hi AJ, The most important thing is determination. The rest is easy. I cut down all forms of sugar, caffeine, soda, cakes, ice creams and heavy carb food. I am a vegetarian so it was easy. I had salads (no dressing) for lunch and a decent dinner portion of low carb food. No snacks inbetween. I had Liptom diet ice tea if I was very hungry in the afternoon. Then I excercised 30 mins 3 days a week. This is all I did and lost about 35-40 lbs in 5 months time. This routine was very difficult to follow initially, but in about 10 days time, ur stomach does get smaller in size and u dont feel like eating as much as u did. I felt the change. and once I dropped down to a normal BMI, it was very easy to maintain. I put on just 16 lbs during my pregnancy and lost them all once the baby was born. Good Luck to u and if you need any more information, let me know!

Thanx alot. This morning I ate some fruit for breakfast and I plan on eating a salad for dinner. With some diet V8 that I love to drink. It only has 10 caleries and 2g of sugar. I plan to drink at least 7 bottles of water everyday. No soda, no ice cream, no cookis, none of that. I also plan to go to the gym or run track everyday for 30 mins. to an hour. How does that sound?
