Miscarriage rates

September 21, 2007

Dr. Q,

I know a while back on a post you stated m/c rates after seeing the fetal heart beat. I can't find those posts and I'm really curious. Our plan is to not tell too many people about the pregnancy until after our 1st u/s. I want to feel pretty confident that it will "stick" before we broadcast the news to everyone (although a part of me would like to tell the world now!). Thanks!

What are your thoughts everyone on when to tell people your good news??

This is a really great question healthyjen...for the most part, I would hold off saying anything until an ultrasound is done 8wks into a pregnancy or beyond. If a fetal heart beat is noted then, you're pretty much in the clear, with only a standard 2-3% miscarriage rate at that time.

Here are some of those rates again as an approximation, and miscarriage rates are dependent on age as they increase signficantly after the age of 37.

positive hpt 10-15%

fetal heart activity at 6 wks 6-8%

fetal heart activity at 8 wks 2-3%

Jen we are only telling immdediate family until after our first ultrasound. Originally we weren't going to tell anyone at all but then I thought that if we lose this baby too, it would be nice to have the support of our parents and siblings to help get us through it.

Thanks Dr. Q and Sar! I am 34 years old and my 1st u/s appt. is in just under a month, when I'll be about 8 1/2 or so weeks along. I will feel pretty confident that things will work out if all goes well at that apptmnt. I'll keep you posted!!
