Metformin vs Advantia

June 15, 2008

Hi Dr Q.

I recently heard of Advantia for pcos like Metformin. What is ur take on this? Which one works better?

The story I heard was the women had bad diabetes and pcos, she was on metformin for 6 yrs. w/ no pregnancies, the Dr switched her to Advantia and that month she got pregnant!!! Do u think it was just a coincidence or are they some factors that could have helped?

Thanks

and one more thing...... Will the Advantia also help w/ weight loss?

There was much promise in the USA about the use of Avandia, as in theory it should work better than metformin given that it directly works to "fix" the insulin resistance that can create PCOS...much research was being done on Avandia...

Most all of this unfortunately came to a halt given that it received a "black box" label, meaining that it can be "dangerous" to take...The evidence for this was lacking given that the study that showed this was poor...Nevertheless, it received much negative press that it was felt "something should be done"...Attempts to remove it from the market failed though as many in the FDA felt that the study wasn't adequate enough to do so...

Mind you, these results may not fully apply to those ttc as the average person for whom this applies was 65 y/o and overtly diabetic...With proper counseling, could still be of benefit and may also promote weight loss....

Thanks Dr, I know u can't give me medical advice, but off the record do u think I should wait it out a bit and give the Metformin a chance, I have been on it almost 2 months, or do u think I should inquire about the Avandia w/ my Dr?

Thanks so much!!!!
