metformin during pregnancy- DR. Q

June 23, 2008

Hi Dr. Q- how long do you usually recommend taking metformin during pregnancy? My sis' doctor had her take it all 9 months. My doctor says the first 12 weeks...what are your thoughts? I want to make sure I am clear of a miscarriage! :) THANKS!

Each doc is different, I base my decision on one of the Best PCOS studies published to date, and along with other leading REs, stop Metformin at the onset of a positive pregnancy test now...The study actually showed a higher miscarriage rate on those who were on Metformin..

Wow! I thought that it helped prevent miscarriage? Is there information as to why it can cause miscarriage?

Thanks!

baby questions...i know that everyone is different..my doc told me to continue the met..but i did not because it was just too much for me..honestly ..if i continued it i think i would have had a m/c because of all the side effects and stuff..even though i had gotten use to it..my body still was not the same..i took it for like 3 days and that was it..

Thanks Summer! I don't have any side effects on it anymore (but i know how bad they can be!), so its really just a matter of my baby's safety at this point! Thank you for the input
