Metformin During Pregnancy

May 15, 2008

Dr. Q- Im wondering your professional opinion on the metformin during pregnancy.

I am 12 weeks today- and the docs say to stop the metformin tomorrow- and Im having an early GTT (1hr) next week as per the MFM's reccomendation. The MFM said that there is NO real data to prove that metformin is harmful, or beneficial- and that it is on a patient to patient basis.

Im scared to death to sop taking something that I feel like has helped sustain this pregnancy- I feel like if things are working, why just stop to see what happens? He also mentioned that there is a "2nd generation" glucophage that is called glyberide- sp? Which he would reccomend starting if the GTT comes bad positive, or high.

I am also stopping the provera and estrodion vaginally tomorrow- please can you tell me your opinions on all of this- I feel like Im stopping everything that I have convinced myself is a security net until now...

I need some reassurance and guidance.. Ladies if you have experience, please weigh in...

Many thanks...

I saw a thing on the news last night here in australia about metformin thru preg. It said that a study had been done here and that it was found that there was no harm caused to the babies of the women who used metformin for the whole 9months of preg. They are now asking for it to be made standard practice here in aust that metformin be given to all women who get the preg diabetes instead of giving them the injectable meds. They said that when they compared a babay of a mother who used metformin and a baby of a mother who didnt, they could not tell the difference between the babies they where both healthy weight, full term, no defects etc etc. Hope this helps some how...

No Good or Harm in taking Metformin...however, a landmark article published last year actually showed that miscarriage rates may be higher in those taking Metformin through the first trimester...Whether true or not up for debate...but think in the USA the recommendation is shifting into stopping it upon pregnancy...

Glyburide is something that is being done and may be better to take for diabetes control under the supervision of your doc....
