Medications in Pregnancy: Toprol XL
December 28, 2007
I take Toprol XL for my heart arrythmia. I have a history of SVT which sent me into Afib one time last year. Is this drug dangerous to take during my pregnancy? I cant seem to get a straight answer from my cardiologist or OB. I have weaned myself down to 50mg daily but cant seem to go any further due to breakthru SVT. I am a nurse and know when I am in this rhythm. What kinds of side effects can I expect in my baby? I am 35 years old and feel its now or never.
Thanks,
Debbie

Beta-Blockers can be associated with IntraUterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)in some cases, and are given through pregnancy. Labetolol and Atenolol are the most common given in pregnancy for hypertensives (I know your condition is different), and can talk to your cardiologist if you'd like to try these meds which are more commonly given, albeit with the same risks...talk to both docs more about this, the fertilityties community is here to help, and am sending you some..
