Me Again...What can be done if anything

December 07, 2007

Okay so I have another question. I have to get fasting glucose done on Tuesday. I know this test takes a while and repeated needle sticks. I have VERY poor veins as in today when I had blood drawn it took 30 minutes to find a vein and only got half of what was needed. They always have to go in my hands b/c that's the only place that they can find a semi good vein. I usually have to be stuck at least twice to get one sample. Is there anything that can alleviate multiple sticks for the Glucose tolerance test? Please tell me there is hope.

Wow...Your One Of Those Tough Ones Even I Can't Stick!!! LOL...

There is very little that can be done, as much of this is genetic along with BMI... The best thing you can do though is consume lots and lots of water to get your plasma volume up to try and make things easier...

Thanks Dr. Q! Yep you would not have fun trying to get my blood. Even the professionals get a run for their money. LOL! Is there a way that they can just leave the needle in the vein like what they do for IV's and draw when they need to or is this an invitation for major infection?

Yep, something like that is an invitation and is only done for those critically ill who require daily IVs...

Well then I guess I will just have to suck it up huh? LOL! Poor me. Maybe this will be another excuse for me to take the day off. Generally speaking, how much blood do they need each time they stick you to test for IR? Is it a tube at each interval or does it vary?

Hey Becky. I had the glucose tolerance test done, and they took a tube of blood each time, but they were the smaller tubes, not the chemistry class test tube sized, but like the size of a magic marker lid.

Lucky you...I had mine done yesterday and it was a medium sized vial :( It was that way the last 3 times I did that test in 1 year.

Thanks Laura and Hope for your response. I think I read somewhere that it depends on the lab. I wish they could just do the finger stick and be done with it. It's not so much the blood that concerns me but them finding my veins each time. Do either of you know how many samples they need.
