low amniotic fluid

May 15, 2008

my dr called me and said that when my ultrasound was done at 19wks the amniotic fluid level was low on one side. she said i shouldn't worry too much because in most cases it will correct itself. i also confirmed this with my aunt is a ultrasound tech. she said they see this commonly with no real issues. made me feel much better.

now after reading online baby information about it, i'm so worried again, because it says that this condition only happens in about 8 in 100 women, and if it happens earlier in the pregnancy they are more at risk for birth defects. i'm extremely worried now. as far as my pregnancy is going, everything else seems fine. i seem healthy as can be. can you give me any information and advice on what i can do to, and just how worried should i be? i need my mind eased... thanks!

Hi Audrey, I don't know anything about this topic, but I did want to send you lots of good thoughts for a healthy, happy baby. I'm sure if the doc said not to worry, that you shouldnt worry. And stop googling it!!! There is all kinds of crazy, scary info out there that is just gonna make you feel worse. Good luck hun.

Hi Audrey,

Oligohydramnios (low fluid) is usually noted in the third trimester, many times with other factors involved, such as poor fetal growth (IUGR) or sometimes when things are normal, just the placenta may not be functioning as well...To have a pocket that may be slightly low, but in the context that there's enough fluid is a very common finding and many times considered ok...

In rare cases can it be present in the second trimester (not your case from what you state) because there would be pretty much no fluid even present...and this occurs in extreme cases with deformities and/or absent fetal kidneys...
