Looking for women using donor sperm

Charlie
Hope09

July 08, 2009

Hello-

My husband and I have been TTC for three years. We found out after year 1 he was sterile (from a issue when he was a baby). After long process, we decided to use a donor sperm. I was hoping to talk with others on this journey- weather you are single, married or with a female partner.

Me- 4 IUI's with Clomid

3 on Bravelle/Menopur

Hello Hope09, there are quite a few individuals here at FT that are either using donor egss or donor sperm. DH and I have to use donor sperm since hubby has azoospermia as a result of a congenital condition. You can type "donor sperm" in the Search field and you will see several results that will display information on the topic as well as other members using donor sperm.

Here is some info on myself:

1st 2 IUI's BFN (Clomid only)

3rd IUI, BFP (moved to injectibles, combined with Clomid) suffered miscarriage as a result of a blighted ovum

At this time, we are waiting for AF to show to start our 4th IUI cycle...which should be sometime around the end of this month.

Please feel free to let us know if you have any further questions. You have come to the perfect place for support.

Yeah- someone else in my shoes! Well- I guess not really yeah b/c no one would be happy for all the struggles we go through.

I have done 7 IUI's .....I will either start my period this Sunday or take a test on the 16th. They gave me a shot of hcg to help if I was pregnant and you have to wait to test.

I am sorry to hear about the miscarriage- but don't give up.

If this IUI does not work, we may do ivf or adopt. I just assume adopt- can't handle the disappointment much more. My hubby is determined for me to have my own. Thanks for the note. It really helps. Sometimes I feel like it is a dirty little secret b/c I am trying to protect my husband. This is really hard for him.

Hi. I know this post has been going on for a few months but i'd like to say hi. I am using donor sperm also and will do my first IUI next week. I hear you on the dirty little secret.. Its not like im embarressed about it, its im trying to protect my husband. SOme people are just so closed minded that i dont want them to be rude, so its better for me to wait and tell most people until after I have a viable pregnancy to show for it... How long have you been using donor sperm? Whats your experience been like?

Hmm.. the donor sperm route has been interesting. It was weird the first time- like what the hell- I may be having a stranger's baby. But- then I got used to it.

I actually did get pregnant back in the summer, but miscarried early on. So I can not say what is it actually like to have a baby.

But, my husband says he in on board. We told my immediate family- because they knew he could not have kids. All of them were super supportive. They all said it did not matter- even on his side. The worst part is the cost. I would not tell people unless you want them to know. You have to think about what you are going to tell the child- if you tell them b/c you don't have to. We decided we would wait and see how we felt.

Are you on clomid or inject. for your IUI? Good luck- keep me posted. It is nice to have fellow "donors"!

Hi. I just did clomid this round. I will try clomid for rounds and then do injectables 1 round if it gets to that. I ovulate fine and everythings good with me. I have a daughter from previous relationship and never thought it would be this hard.... How manu donor IUI have you done total?

I mean clomid 2 rounds and round of injectables. If it doesnt happen in 3 rounds, we are taking a break

I have done 4 IUI's with clomid and two with inject. Got pregnant on the 2nd inject. I did not like clomid- it made me crazy. Inject are more expensive, but seem more accurate. Sounds like you have a good plan. Good idea to take a break. It is helpful. We have done that several times- mostly for money, but emotional too. This would be my first child.

Hudamum- Let me see if I remember... I started on day3 of cycle. The first time I was on a small dose (1 bravelle for maybe 7 days, and then 2 bravelle each day for 5). The docs did not want to give me too much because they have to watch to see how you react- avoid hyper stimulation.

I then did it a second time with 1 bravelle for 5 days and the rest of the time 2 bravelle. I had my u/s over the weekend and the doc told me to come back in on Monday b/c I only had 2 follicles at 15mm and 16mm which is too small. When I came in on Monday- I ovulated over the weekend. So pissed- missed the whole cycle.

The third time (but 2nd time with IUI), the doctor put me on 1 bravelle and 1 menopur for 5 days, and then 6 days of 2 bravelle and 1 menopur. I am very regular at 30 day cycle and opk about day 13. I had one egg at 18 mm when they triggered and 2 small ones at 14 and 15 on the other side. So- one viable follicle. But all you need is one and it took. It turned out not to be a viable pregnancy, but the docs do not think it something with my body- but just a natural things many women go through.

I am overweight by about 30 pounds and I am not sure if that is playing a role. My doc has told me no. As far as all the tests have shown, I do not have anything specific that they can tell that prevents me from getting pregnant (other than my husband's sperm count). The shots are not so bad, but the meds can be expensive. The side effects are small- not like clomid. On clomid I had hot flashes, and would cry for no reason in the middle of the day.

Hope this helps.
