Just wondering- could this really happen????

Hi Dr(s)!

One of my friends recently lost their baby/pregnancy at 22 weeks :(

The pregnancy was fine from the beginning- strong heartbeat, normal growth, etc. They went in and found out the sex at 19 weeks(boy). At that appointment every thing still looked great. My friend Jamie found out at 22 weeks that the baby had died. Her midwife told her that it was because she had developed a yeast infection and the infection punctured/weakend the placenta. I have never heard about this before! I've read that MANY women get yeast infections while they are pregnant- and they have normal pregnancies. I am not sure if Jamie's midwife is accurate or not.

Wow, I had the most severe form of YI throughout the pregnancy and it turned out just fine. I have read about this too and asked several times to my Dr, she said not possible. May be she had something else going on? I think other bacterial infections that could have been mistaken to be a YI be accountable?

That's what I am wondering too. To me a YI does not seem like it could be life threating to a fetus- no matter what the age- but especially at 22 weeks!

Lisa I don't know the answer to your question, but please give your friend a big (((((hug))))). My heart just breaks hearing this and I can't imagine ever losing a baby that far along. It was heartbreaking enough for me when I lost my two at 8wks and 11wks(though he/she stopped growing at 5 to 6wks). I'm glad she has a friend like you to help her through this difficult time.

lisa that is awful!! i have never in my life heard of this , my friend lost her baby girl 3 days b4 her due date and it was due to a clot in her cord, blocking off her oxygen, the doctors said she could have been born a week earlier but would more than likely had been brain damaged. i had YI with my 2 boys i had and was quite bad with first son, and he was and is perfect and no complications.

It really is heartbreaking- I don't even know what to say to her. I had never heard of that happening either-to me it just does not seem to make sense. It's scary though- I'm just over 17 weeks- I can not even imagine.....

I've heard of this happening in sheep and cattle - even of the reproductive tract being damaged due to yeast infections - but not in humans. (It was in a veterinary medicine article I found on Medline that I don't remember how I came across at the time.) It may have been the type of yeast? (There is more than one type of yeast infection. Most of the time it is candida - but it isn't the only species out there.) Was your friend immunosuppressed or otherwise have a compromised immune system? Weird things can happen when the immune system is not working properly.

If I were your friend, I would insist on a full miscarriage test panel and a pap culture to see if something can be identified. But, I'm the type of person who wants to have as many answers as humanly possible. Of course, sometimes there is no answer.

Thanks MLO

I am not sure what Jamie's medical history is exactly- I know that everything was great from the beginning- until she lost the baby. As for the miscarriage work up- I know they had some testing done- not sure exaclty what that entailed though. I don't want to get too into it with her- as I said before- It's scary- and I feel so bad! Almost like I feel guilty for still being pregnant. I just think the whole pregnancy loss is such a terrible thing for anyone to go through.
