Just had my IUI...

July 23, 2008

Hi all,

I had my Natural IUI this morning, and I'm hoping for the best in two weeks. My husband's sperm count after washing turned out fairly low -- 3 million motile -- so I'm not holding my breath. Originally, the nurse advised me to come in again for another IUI tomorrow morning, but we may reconsider, since sperm count was low. I'm waiting for a call back from nurse/doc today to advise me on coming in or not tomorrow.

What do you all think about this? How low do you think my chances are?

PS: I got a positive OPK yesterday, and have felt some mild cramping all morning, so I assume the timing of the insemination is right. Just hoping the spermies find their way to my eggie!!

What do you all think?

July 23, 2008

Disregard all of the above! I just got a call from my nurse who said that there was an "error" and that my husband's sperm count post-wash was only 300,000 and NOT 3 million as the doctor told me earlier today!!

Can you believe this? I am SO angry. How could this happen? Needless to say, I will taking this up with my RE when he returns. And from the little I know, 300,000 is NOT going to cut it for IUI, which means we'll likely looking at IVF/ICSI.

This is so upsetting. As if fertility issues aren't stressful enough, now I have to deal with incompetence.

christine, I am sorry to hear your news. I don't know much about IUI but I think that is quite a difference. Could you have said no to the IUI after hearing the sperm count after washing? What is the ideal amount of sperm for IUI after washing?

July 23, 2008

Honestly, I think I would have done it either way. Also, it's not super-expensive, since we have some medical coverage. What bothered me most was the doctor's attitude about it, and the fact that my hope is almost completely diminished now.

Various doctors look for various numbers for IUI; some require a million, some require 10 million. Just depends on the place.

Thanks for writing, Gibber.

I don't have any answers for you but just wanted to wish you good luck. I hope you get a BFP!!!!

July 23, 2008

Ohh, thank you Sar22222! I really appreciate it. Will keep you posted, of course! :)

July 23, 2008

yes please do :)

July 24, 2008

How do you think that could happen? Do you think they messed up the count or messed up the delivery or screwed up the washing?

July 24, 2008

do you think that while they are washing the sperm they can mess it up somehow? Thats a good ? for the main man on here, Dr Q!

Maybe that dingy nurse or whoever told you it was 3 million just looked at the 3 and assumed???

July 24, 2008

Yeah, who knows. Of course, it had to be our sperm that they screw up!

July 24, 2008

Gibber and Chels: Dr. Q answered our question about how many sperm it takes for fertilization. Here's the direct link: http://www.fertilityties.com/post/show/question-about-number-of-sperm-needed/113767

July 30, 2008

thanks Christine - UGH - darn sperm!!! What is the latest on your situation? Iam keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!! BABYDUST!!!!!

July 30, 2008

Hi Gibber. TOday I'm 7dpIUI (7 days past IUI), and I'm just going about my business, waiting patiently to test. I don't feel anything different at this point, except mild cramps a few times a day. This morning, my husband asked why my boobs were veiny. I don't think that's unusual for me, but it was an interesting observation.

I plan to test on Sunday or Monday.

I also spoke with my RE on Monday, and he basically said he thinks that IVF/ICSI is "inevitable" for DH and I, but he saw no harm in trying one more IUI. He said it wasn't impossible to get pregnant with such low sperm counts, but unlikely. So, we're hoping for the best, but preparing for the liklihood that we'll have to pull out the big guns soon.

What's up with you?

July 30, 2008

Good luck!!!I hope in a week you get that BFP!!!! Baby dust!

July 30, 2008

why wouldnt he offer you to take injectables and IUI instead of going right into IVF which is pretty invasive. Either way you have to take the shots but you could try an IUI first - or do you not want to do that?

July 30, 2008

I declined them because the fertility meds make me nervous and because we really wanted to see how my husband's sperm handled the washing. Shots likely not necessary in my case b/c of sperm issues. Thanks, Chels!

July 30, 2008

you will have to take them when you do the IVF tho - im hopin that you wont have to deal with any of that tho cuz this cycle works!!!

July 30, 2008

I'll probably do it for IVF, although Natural IVF is also done, too, though doctors don't like to recommend it.

Thanks, Chels! What's new?

July 31, 2008

Christine, I amn keeping my fingers crossed this cycle works for you!!!! Thanks for asking aobut me. I am on cd28 and just waiting for AF to show. Absolutely no signs of pregnancy and my temps have started to drop. This was my 2nd round on clomid and the next cycle will be my 3rd. I am really hoping that my prolactin levels are down and that this could be our month. If BFN this next cycle we will likely move on to IUI with clomid.

July 31, 2008

Hey Gibber -- not bad. Most people get pregnant within a few cycles of clomid, right?

I'm rooting for ya!

July 31, 2008

thanks Christine - here's hoping!

July 31, 2008

Sending you lots and lots of luck!!! :O)

July 31, 2008

i never knew they could do a natural IVF cycle - do they just go in and take 1 follicle? Wow, thats interesting!!!

Nothing new, think i may be ovulating - or gettng my period! LOL! Never know now! I am 3 weeks from my m/c bleed and huge a** cyst so its very unlikley that i am getitng AF now, usually takes 6-8 weeks after all that.

Im gonna start clomid and go backwards in my fertility stuff to give my body a break from all that...... fun, fun, fun!!! Best of luck to ya!!

July 31, 2008

very interesting, I never thought of a natural IVF either especially since it is pretty expensive to do I would think they would want to make sure there was more than one egg to pick from in case it isn't a perfect one. Guess we learn something new here all the time, that's why it's so great!! lots of luck!!! :O)

Hi Jenstar and Chels,

Jenstar, you are correct that most doctors tend not to recommend natural IVF for that reason. But you can still request it. You should read what this doctor told me on this other board that I frequent: http://www.inciid.org/forums/ivf_high_tech/index.html

Hopefully we don't have to do IVF! Thanks, ladies.
