IVF and BMI

June 03, 2008

We're just going to begin the IVF process. I'm 38 and ovulate and have regular cycles on my own, otherwise healthy, but overweight. I'm 5'5" and weigh 230. My BMI is about 39. I'm trying to lose weight and should anyway, but I feel that time is ticking with my age and we want to move on IVF now. Could the clinic NOT do the procedure because of my BMI?

Hi Lolo,

In people who are in their 20's or very early 30's, waiting several months for weight loss to help with pregnancy rates and fertility is always a good choice...

A few months of weight loss may be the most that would be acceptable for you, although most REs would agree that immediate treatment would be recommendable for you...and treatments may be in conjuction with a weight loss program...Would find it difficult to believe that a center would turn you down at this time because of BMI...

You will and should, however, get fully consented about the possible risks regarding pregnancy given this present situation....

Thanks Dr. Q!

I'm working on the weight loss and my dh and I are going to the recommended seminar next week. We should get our answers there.
