Is a high progesterone in early pregnancy most likely due to clomid or multiples?
Hi, i am currently 4 weeks pregnant after taking 25mg of clomid cycle days 5-9. My progesterone 5 dpo was 24. At 13 dpo it was 46. My HCG went from 36 at 11 dpo to 128 on 13 dpo. I am not on any other progesterone supplementation. Do you think the high progesterone is most likely due to the clomid or from multiples? Thank you so much for your time.

Actually HCG levels do not indicate multiples. There is a large range of where HCG can be at a certain stage in pregnancy so there is no way of knowing by HCG level if this is a multiple pregnancy. I have seen women with twins have lower levels than those with a singleton pregnancy. This is a common misconception. The only way to determine if there are multiples is by US to see how many sacs are developing & you are too early to have this done.
Thank you for the input. I do understand the only way to know for sure is ultrasound. My question is because my level is higher then expected for my stage of pregnancy (upper limit of normal on my lab's assay for first trimester is 42). Women with multiples do tend to have higher levels of progesterone than singleton pregnancies (this has been shown in multiple studies). Clomid does affect your progesterone b/c it induces ovulation which in turn causes your body to secrete more. My question for the doctor is because of how much the level increased between 5dpo and 13 dpo to an above normal range is this more likely due to a lingering effect of the clomid or multiple pregnancy. HCg levels do not tell one for sure whether one is carrying multiples or not but just like progesterone they do tend to be higher and rise faster in twin pregnancies. I know ultimately I will just have to wait for my u/s but I was curious to get the docs opinion on my chances.
