Irregular Period and Ovulation

Woman_3
Sara

August 03, 2007

Hello. My cycles can range anywhere from 28-35 days and period lasts for 5-6 normally. This month my period was going on for 3 weeks, which has never happened to me before. However, I was travelling and stressed out somewhat. I went to my obgyn and she prescribed Provera. After two days of Provera, the bleeding stopped. She also conducted a blood test and transvaginal ultrasound. My ovaries and uterus looks good according to my doc. The blood test came back with the result that everything was good except I had low progesterone and I probably didn't ovulate this month. This is really the 1st month my husband and I are trying to conceive. So she said to wait until my period "restarts" and then baby dance from 10cd-18cd.

My questions are:

1. Can the cause of the 3-week period be due to travel/stress?

2. Is it abnormal to have this long period?

3. If I was on my period, isn't the progesterone level already low during that time? If so, why would the doc conclude that I didn't ovulate?

4. Could this have been an anovulatory month?

Thank you in advance!

travelling and stress, changing time zones, etc can create an irregular cycle and should normalize immediately, as it should be just an immediate factor. The irregularity is because you didn't ovulate keeping your progesterone low from all the stress, and it appears it was an anovulatory month. Once your period restarts, you can always do the "dance" starting at day 10 at least every other day thereafter and that should be sufficient. I always recommend also an OPK and that will really tell you if will eventually ovulate, and thus eliminate much confusion.

Thanks doc! There's only one problem though. I was prescribed 10mg of Provera to be taken for 10 days. I believe the cap for the bottle wasn't tight so basically I lost two pills. Therefore, I've only taken 8 pills total. My obgyn is out of town and will not be returning till several days. Do you think that will highly impact the "restarting" of my cycle. Do you think the doc will re-prescribe me 10 more pills the next cycle? Have you dealt with this before?

Hi Sara! :-)

I'm not a doctor, I'm a fellow poster like you, but I was also irregular and had a hard time conceiving because of it.

In my last cycle, my doctor also gave me Provera to start my period, then as soon as my period arrived, I started on Clomid. I have only taken 7 pills of Provera during that cycle. He used to put me on 10 pills (for 3 cycles), and my period would usually arrive on the 10th day or on my 10th pill. My husband and I did try to conceive on our own with Provera alone for those 3 cycles, but we were not successful.

When I only took 7 pills, it took more than 15 days after the last pill for my period to come, and that's when I started on Clomid. I did ovulate on Clomid in my first cycle. I did not get pregnant because we actually missed the day of ovulation. So, on this cycle, I have been doing BBT charting, monitoring my mucus and cervical position, and used OPK. For the first time, we timed our "baby dance" when I got a positive OPK.

Every woman would react differently on Provera, but I think 8 pills would still make your period come. Then you can use OPK right after your period. I would recommend the Answer Brand OPK because it has 20 test sticks inside, and it's only $20/box. It's more economical. It's always nice to have 20 than 7 in there, right? It worked for me. So, good luck! Sorry for this long post. Dr. Q will definitely give you a more detailed scientific explanation.

Hi Lexie,

I like your recommendation on the OPK and Provera, since they're inexpensive, (I haven't heard about this particular OPK), and am happy your sharing your experience here on this site so that others can learn from you also...Keep it up :)

Although some people need as little as 5 days worth of provera (while it's 10 mg/day) most do require a 10 day Provera pack to induce their period.

Thanks Lexie and Dr Q. So do you think there might be a problem with just taking 8 pills? Will that prevent me from starting my period?

8 pills of 10mg should do the trick for most people to get your period started

Thanks! It's the 5th day and I'm still waiting for my period. Although, there's been really light pinkish-brown spotting since last night. I dunno if that's my period....? I know I'm not pregnant so it can't be implantation bleeding.....?

Sara,

you may have some mild spotting and that's very common when actually on the Provera pills. Your period, though, will come a few days after your last pill
