Dr. Q,

My husband and I are both wondering if you think that I am putting the baby and myself at risk for having a long and hard labor if I am being induced at 37 weeks when I am not dilated or effaced. We had our amnio done today and the results were 38,000 so we know the baby's lungs are developed but I am concerned with putting us both through a difficult and stressful labor. Can you please tell me your thoughts on this? Thank you so much :)

I was induced with my daughter 13yrs ago, so I know the pain is more intense, especially from the pitocin but I can't remember if I was dilated at the time or not.

Sar..I was dialated to 4 cm b/f they broke my water and gave pitocin and such...I had a 50 hr labor when I was just 35 wks...it hurt yes..but i still did it with no epidural. I think each baby it gets a little easier! I hope!

Sar- i also have heard that induction is more painful.. but that does not mean you are at risk- just alot of work ahead.. is there a reason other than Cam's size why you want to be induced? i was also delivering a large baby and was sectioned at 37 weeks..

His size and shoulders are the only concern for us if we wait until I am 39-40wks.

When I was induced 13yrs ago, my labor was 12 1/2 hrs long, then with my son I went in on my own and it was 6 hours long. I am just wondering what the difference is, if any to be induced when not dilated and effaced.

Sar- that is the reason I was sectioned- ( DS was 8lbs and a big head, wide shoulders and chest) induction was not an option for me--- I will say a planned C Section was not bad at all- I know everyone has different experiences- but for me it was not painful, I went home after 5 days in the hosp. and had no need for pain meds when I was home.. I moved slow but it was nto at all like I expected.. Just thought I'd share :)

The doc who did my u/s today for my amnio said that if I am induced on Thurs and make no progress that they'll send me home. That makes no sense to me that they'd start the induction and then stop. But then again, he wasn't my obgyn so I have no clue if what he said has any truth to it.

My friend was supposed to be induced this evening. Her Ob Gyn said they were going to induce her slightly (whatever that means) and then if no progress tomorrow morning, induce her with stronger meds. But nature had a different course. She went into natural labor this morning :)

I think that if the baby is fine and tollerating everything they might could send you home if you make no progress... but I am not a doctor- however I have several friends who have been induced and they were there for the long haul :)
