I Have A Few Questions
March 16, 2008
Hello To All,
I am new here. When I say new I don't just mean to the sight, I mean to all of this in general, TTC I mean.
If its not to much to ask, I was hoping to get some of my questions answered.
I guess I will start by explaning a little bit about myself. i am 19 years old, I have been married for close to 2 years, my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for the last 6 months, with no luck. I have irregular periods, meaning I have about 2-3 heavy periods a year (if I am lucky), and I am about 80-100 pounds overweight( does weight matter?) I guess my question is where should we start? We would really love to be parents, and I wanna know how to make that happen. I read somewhere the first step when TTC is making a doctors appointment, well what kind of doctor should I see? An OBGYN or a physician? Should I make an appointment for just me or should I make one for my husband too? Where should we go from there? Is there anything we should do before I make an appointment to see a doctor?
Sorry to be playing 20 questions, we are just really anxious to start a family. Anyhow thanks in advance. Any information is better than no information!

Thank you HopeN. I am already trying to lose the weight, but it is proving difficult. I do good one day, then the next Im back to giving into my cravings. As far as seeing on OBGYN goes, what tests do they normally run in order to figure out why I'm not ovulating? Is it costly? I don't have health insurance, any expense would be out of pocket.
Do u have insurance that covers infertility?
They would do an
LH,
FSH
Prolactin
TSH
DHEAS
Testosterone
ACTH
Glucose
Insulin
Lipid panel
Complete blood work
If u dont have insurance, at the minimum, ur dr will do LH, FSH, Prolactin, TSH, DHEAS to see if u have PCOS or not. Im not sure abt the cost as my insurance covers these blood tests. Im sorry that u dont have health insurance..Good Luck

HI TEXAS GIRL(IM FROM TEXAS TOO) I JUST WANTED TO WELCOME YOU TO THE SITE HOPEN IS RIGHT U NEED TO GO SEE A DR I WOULD PROBABLY START WITH OBGYN SINCE U ARE NOT INSURED(NOT SURE HOW EXPENSIVE A RE IS) THEY WILL PERFORM TEST TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON WITH UR BODY. I AM ALSO OVER WEIGHT AND ONLY HAVE A PERIOD MAYBE 2-3 TIMES A YEAR, BUT I DONT HAVE PCOS I WAS PUT ON PROMETRIUM TO INDUCE MY PERIOD AND AM ON MY 4TH CYCLE OF CLOMID TO HELP ME OVULATE IF THIS CYCLE DONT WORK I WILL BE MOVING ON TO INJECTIONS. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS THE LADIES AND DR.S ON HERE ARE AWESOME AND VERY GOOD ABOUT HELPING U, GOOD LUCK GIRL LOTS OF BABY DUST. PS WHAT PART OF TEXAS ARE U FROM?
Not sure about how much an Ob Gyn can charge u..depends but anywhere between $100-120 here in IL if ur insurance doesnt cover it. I am guessing the lack of regular periods may make the Dr Rx Clomid without blood tests, but generally the blood tests are done before treatment begins. May be u can convince ur Dr that u know u want to give it a shot..I totally understand about difficulty in losing weight..It was very tough for me..But my Dr refused to give me medications unless I lost the weight, so I had no choice, and now I am 31 weeks preggo. So, dont lose hope. If u are over 35 u may need more aggressive treatment than clomid and for that u definately need insurance as it requires regular Ultrasounds and other things..U can also try something called Fertilaid, Ovulex etc. No one can say for sure it works and they are in no way a substitute to clomid or other fertility meds, but if u dont have the resources, u can do ur weight loss along with these meds and see how they work as something is better than nothing..minimally, u may atleast need Provera to start ur period cycle and agan only a Dr can Rx that. Ultimately its ur choice and sending u tons of

Thank you Hope! How long had you been trying to get preggo, before it happened? Is this your first baby? Are you having a boy or girl? Sorry to ask so many questions, I guess congratulations is more like it!
I am 19 about to be 20 in a April, so age isn't the problem. I am gonna talk to my husband today about making a gyno appointment. If blood tests are 100% necessary I am sure we can find the money to have them done, even if it means going without a few luxurixes for a little while. As far as Provera and Clomid go, that doesn't sound to bad, so long as Clomid isn't gonna guarantee that I have twins or triplets! :)
Thanks for your help Ladies!

Hey Texas Girl, Thanks!. yes this is my first. Im having a girl :) I was trying for a while beginning dec 2005 and didnt know anything abt conceiving, PCOS, I wasnt even having regular periods taht time, so 12 months had passed that way and then I was losing weight for about 4 months and stuff and then finally got preggo Aug 2007.
You are very young and u have time by ur side. thats the greatest advantage u have,I was 27 when i started trying. So, it would freak me out abt the clock ticking lol.
Good luck and keep us posted abt ur Drs visit. Good Luck.

Hey Carolyn, I really didnt have any TWW signs..But week 5, 6 until today, loads and loads of it, I wore a panty liner the entire 1st tri!! Its due to the high estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy!
Corpus Luteal cysts do last until 14 DPO if not preggo and then once u are pregnant can last upto week 10 as that is the one producing progesterone for ur body. After week 10, the cyst goes away and the placenta takes over..If u have several CL cysts, it means u ovulated more than 1 egg...
Good luck

It was very hard Texas Girl. The only good thing was Ive never been overweight and the work stress n god knows what caused me to put on all that in a few months time, so my body responded well when i went on a strict diet.
So, basically I went on a low carb diet and went to the gym twice a week. I stopped sugar, caffeine, soda completely. Drank lots of water. I would have loved to excercise more, but Im a lazy bum. Basically I cut down eating and ate when necessary what my body needs and no junk. eat healthy. I would recommend joining a weight loss program (not those where u buy food) and follow that. As soon as I lost about 10 lbs I started seeing results, my periods resumed. In the down side, I developed Insulin resistance because of overweight (not saying everyone will, but ur at high risk if overweight) and now during preggo, I feel bad im paying the price, I excrete sugar in the urine all the time and in blood too and Im on watch by the Dr for diabetes. Thats why its good to get back to normal weight before getting preggo. Esp if u have a family history of diabetes. Im not saying all women get this, but just increases the odds. Good Luck and hope u report the good news abt pregnancy sooon

Ok, since u say u dont have regular periods, it means u are not ovulating (releasing the egg). If this doesnt happen, then u cant get preggo or u wont get periods. U need to see an Ob Gyn or if u need aggressive treatment, see a REproductive Endocrinologist to first make u ovulate. Talk to ur Dr abt Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). She will do a few blood tests and give pills like Clomid, Provera to start ur period and help u ovulate.
Secondly, overweight can lead to PCOS and irregular periods. I didnt get my periods for a whole year because I put on 30-35 lbs all of a sudden and it resumed once I lost them all. So, your best starting point is to start losing the weight. Im sure this is what ur Dr is going to advise you to do too.
The RE will perform fertility tests on you first and then if needed on ur hubby too. Just browse around the internet for good REs in ur area and go through their resumes and stuff.
U will definately be a mommy soon. But as u mentioned the starting point is to see a Dr and weight loss. Good Luck!
