I am worried....
May 13, 2008
Dr.Q. I bought myself a book about having twins and it states that by 14 weeks (which I will be tomorrow) I should have gained at least 15 pounds according to my BMI if not more. I have only gained 5 so far... I have been eating healthy (fruits, veggies, whole grains, low fat dairy, etc, lean protein) and have been staying fit by taking walks 3 times per week but am now worried that maybe I am doing it all wrong. This book scared me into thinking that if I dont put on some mega pounds soon that I am at a serious risk for preterm labour....please help...
Liane - please dont panic! Those books are written to cover a huge population of woman and they talk in very general terms, and in averages. According to my book, I should have gained between 22 and 27 pounds by now, but I have only gained 12 at 31 weeks. I know Im not having twins, but I didnt gain any weight until after 13 weeks...everyone is so different. My doctor is not concerned at all about my weight gain (or lack there of)...so neither am I. I would talk to you doc at your next appointment and she what she expects you to gain and how many calories you should be eating a day to acheive the goal. Im sure you and your little beans will be fine...just keep eating healthy :)
hi same here. gained only 12 so far. Dr. says its fine. every woman is different. for some the whole we eat goes to the baby which case we don't get too fat and weigh less. other side baby gives half to our own body each time, which make us weigh more.
anyway baby or babies take whatever they need form us.she said like a parasite. so don't worry. its fine.

Hi Liane I go to the Doc today and I am not sure how many pounds that i have gained..but I am gonna tell you what my Dr has told me But remember that all Dr.'s have different opinions and practice differently...She told me that even though I am having twins she does not really expect me to gain weight until around my fourth month..and they look for me to gain 1-2 pounds a week after the fourth month..She says this because of the morning sickness and the loss of appetite that happens in the first trimester..She also told me like you said to give into your cravings..she says that if you wake up in the morning and you want meat loaf then that is what you eat..she said as long as you are eating the eight fruit and veggies and drinking your water like you are supposed to..to have a good time while you are pregnant..but to watch out for the sugar intake..Now she says that I need an extra 600 calories a day..I am not sure that I will be able to get that in by eating healthy at every moment..I try yo just eat veggies with every meal and when i snack i make sure that it is fruit..She also says that to eat a lot of dairy....like milk and cheese and yogurt..From my understanding from her and the Nutritionist..SP..LOL...when you have multiples the weight gain is different and the diet is different from when you are having a singleton..so basically they want you to pack on the pounds because when you have multiples you are at higher risk for preterm stuff..so she said that she wants me to get eating and gain weight just incase preterms stuff does come up and the babies will be at a good weight..I go to a high risk OBGYN Practice..and I see a maternal fetal spec at every U/S that is who performs my U/S...so she could just be taking these precautions because of the type of pratice they are you know so I am not sure..but I know that starting now I will go in to see them every two weeks since i am in my second trimester..again thy are a high risk practice..so that could be just what they do at their practice..I am not sure as I have never been preggo before and have not experienced other OBGYNS while I am pregnant..maybe the other ladies can give soem insight..but i say don;t worry because i lost 10 pounds and i only gained 2 back at my last visit..and that was 3 weeks ago..so at this appt and at my 2 week appt we will see how the weight gain has changed..I will keep youposted when i get back today..but i will def listen to the ladies about those books..they are so general and give general explanantions..take care sweetie...
Wow Summer thanks for that information and for the reassurance. I go to see my doctor next week and after that will be seeing her every 2 weeks until the end. I too have been trying to stick to fruits and veggies to make sure to get my vitamins and stuff and have been eating lots of dairy...yogurt, milk, etc. I thought I was doing well at 4 pounds weight gain but like you said the reason they want you to put more on is because of risk of preterm birth. I will talk to my doctor next week to see what she says. Let me know how your appt today went.
Well Looks like I lost 2 pounds since my last appt..So I lost the two that i gained..LOL..but she said that proably was earlier and now I will start to gain since the morning sickness has went away..Just incase I am to drink ensure for weight gain between meals..So hope everything goes well for you...Okay I thought that my office was just being too cautious by bringing me in every 2 weeks so that must be most practice when someone has multiples..take care sweetie...
