Thanks Though!
Hypo-thyroid and TTC
May 30, 2008
Hi. I am hypo-tyroid, Last lab work said it was 7.0. I take Armour 60mg 2xday. I also have low progesterone and am taking Prometrium for that. I am currently not ovulating. My question is, What do your levels need to be to ovulate? I don't know how long I've been anovulatory b/c I was on BCPs for a while, been off since January 08. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
Hi MrsP777,
Whereas there may be only a very short delay to fertility after bcp, this may not be the case now for you given that you were last on them in January...
Although true that hypothyroidism can keep one from ovulating, usually has to be very severe with many other symptoms...Best to also be checked for other possible causes such as PCOS, elevated Prolactin, then treatments can be given so that you ovulate and get pregnant quicker...
Good luck, and keep us posted....

Hi mrs P777!!!!
i have the opposite, an underactive thyroid. this came about 6 mths ago after a miscarriage. once diagnosed i was put on thyroxin and was told my cycles should start up again quite quickley once the meds started to work. anyway 5mths later still absolutley nothing was happening even though my thyroid was purfectley medicated for 2mths at this time. i was sent to the specialist and to my shock found out i had PCOS, and this was the reason for no cycle, not the thyroid. common symptoms of PCOS are facial hair, weight gain, acne and of course menstral irregularities. the only thing i experienced was not having a cycle. i would definatley talk to your doc about a referral to a specialist, even if you dont have PCOS they may be able to find another reason why you are not ovulating. good luck.

im also on armour and my doc started me on 60mg 1 time a day and i felt so much better for the 2 or 3 months i was on it. My thyroid test was on the low end of normal but doc wanted me to try the meds anyway then when i went to the RE he wanted me to stop. I have since started again cuz i have had 2 IUI's and 2IVF without any success. Im hoping that the meds help to regulate everything and maybe get preggo in the proccess.
PCOS symptoms can vary and they can be non present as well. Some of the issues can be hairy - like on the face, gaining weight, no periods (while not on birth control pills) however, the main one would be the incosistnat periods tho.

So being having "sub-clinical hypothyroidism" can cause you not to ovulate? Funny, at my regular gyno they tested my thyroid and said that it was "normal" but when I went to the last month for the first time after 15 months of trying with no luck, he ran tests and found that my TSH was 7.58 and put me on Synthroid to bring me back to normal. Apparently the regular tests at the gyno are not as sensitive and their levels of "normal" are not as strict. I know that levels can change but still..... I have had regular cycles for the most part. My RE also said that I had "slightly" elevated Prolactin levels. Could these two things be preventing me from getting pregnant??? I am scheduled to start Clomid next cycle as well as have IUI. God, I hope this works for us.....
a high prolactin level can DEFF cause you to not get preggo! Holly from this site is evidence of that - she had a high level for month tried to get preggo with nothing and then got her levels under control with meds and i believe it was 2 cycles later that she got preggo and is prob about 30 weeks now.
