hyperstimulation

Hi Dr. Q

What is hyperstimulation of the ovaries and what causes it? I am taking 50mg clomid CD 3-7 and dexamethasone CD 3-12/13 or until I get a shot of HcG. Everything I have read about dexamethasone talks about the risk of over stimulation. The reason I ask is my last cycle and after my first IUI it felt like my left ovary was swollen. I know pcos can cause your ovaries to swell due to the horomone imbalance but can fertlity drugs cause that as well? Also, I get what I call "boob attacks" which are sharp pains in my breasts. What causes that and could it be just a change in horomones?

Hi Cynthia,

any medication given to create follicles, the name process is called "Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation". Clomid definately falls under this category, and some do argue that Dexamethasone also does. It is rare to have "Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome" while on these meds, and you can read more about this by searching this site.

Sharp pains shouldn't result from this especially before you ovulate, and if they continue, talk to your doc about this for a breast exam...
