HSG and Possible Blockage

March 03, 2008

Dear Dr.-

I am 27 years old and have been married for 4 years and been TTC for approx. 2yrs. I have been diagnosed w/PCOS though I'm not over weight, but am not ovulating on my own. I had 4 rounds of Clomid, which did cause me to ovulate. We then found out the my husbands sperm motility was lower than adequate, which put a slight hold on things. He is currently being treated with antibiotics and his count has improved significantly over the past couple of months. I recently had an HSG done to rule out the possibility of a tubal blockage. However, the HSG was immensely painful and the radiologist affirmed that there was a blockage to the left tube, but the right was 100% open. My GYN was present and said he disagreed, explaining that my tube did not "dilate" indicating that he didn't think it was a blockage, but the dye mostly went thru the other tube b/c it chose the path of least resistance. Just wondering if it is likely that i have a blockage or if my dr. is right in thinking it might not be blocked? Also is there any hope for achieving natural pregnancy (aside from Clomid or other fertility drugs) considering my current situation? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to FertilityTies!

There is some truth to what your gyne is saying...sometimes there is proximal spasm of the tube, and this can be suspected if absolutely no dye goes through, so that in reality the tube may be open...

You may then be able to achieve a pregnancy on your own without intervention...even if I'm wrong and the tube is truly blocked, you still have one open tube...Once the sperm recovers, we usually give upto 6 months of Clomid to achieve a pregnancy...

Dr. Q-

I have an appt. with my GYN this evening to discuss the pain i have experienced since having the HSG done. The pain is persistent in my upper right abdominal area and worsens when i walk, laugh, cough, or sneeze. Not sure if there's a relationship between this current pain and having the HSG done, but hopefully i will find out soon. Any suggestions?

Also, i would like to take a second to thank you for your prompt response. As I am sure most members feel, I have been very anxious and scared out of my mind regarding my present circumstances. Therefore, I just wanted to express my immense gratitude to you for your time and expertise. Thank You!!

Both of my tubes were 100% blocked had surgery on Jan 4 2008 they opened both tubes and the dr said we had 3 months @ 90% chance to get preg.

Thank you- that's very reassuring. This whole process is overwhelming and very anxiety inducing. That's great news about the 90% preg. rate w/in 3 months!
