HSG and Another Weird Question
November 29, 2007
Hi Dr. Q,
I actually have two questions for you. First I am getting an HSG done on December 5th. My question is if this procedure is very painful, moderately painful, or not painful at all? I have been hearing mixed comments from not hurting at all to so painful that I had to bite my hand to keep from crying. YIKES! Could you give me some insight?
Also, in the past 6 months I have had to be induced by Provera twice. The first time something that I didn't experience before happened and this time it happened again. The first time I was induced I had a fairly normal cycle just a bit on the heavy side. However, the third or fourth day into my cycle, I noticed a weird looking blood clot. It actually resembled flesh! It wasn't clotty but long and meaty. This happened again today. What could this be? Build up, uterine lining, something else? Thanks!

I also had an HSG back in September. It was painful... it just felt like very hard cramps. And it lasted for about 30 seconds - one minute and then it's gone completely. I did spot for a very little after the procedure but all in all it was not that bad and it is very fast! The thing that takes the longest is them setting everything up. I dont know about the clotting thing though, I'm sure Dr.Q will have an answer for you on that one! Best of luck sweetie and remember to take tylenol 1 hour before the HSG. My doctor told me to do that and it really helped!
I found it to be the most painful thing that I've ever experienced, and I have stepped on a chunk of broken glass and almost severed my big toe. But the whole experience only lasted ten minutes, and the truly painful part only 30 seconds, so you get through it pretty quickly. The next day I had some cramping, worse than a period, but not nearly as bad as the procedure.
I took 2 extra strength Advil an hour and a half prior, and I don't think it did jack! I had some super-strong left over prescription pain pills from my husband's knee surgery that I wanted to take, but my husband was scared it might somehow interact badly with whatever they were doing, so I didn't take them just so he wouldn't worry, and I wish I had! But you may be one of the lucky ones that barely feel it.
Crystal,
Your doctor asked you to cough? Reminds me of prostate exam...which I really don't know if they ask you to cough or not. humm? Interesting. Thanks for your reply. They called me in some Valium because I am a bit nervous. Hopefully that will help me relax and I will take IB before. Thanks again.

I had HSG in June...it was not near the pain that a lot of people say...but I'm sure tolerance is different. Not much different than a pap, although you do get some pms like cramping and need to wear a pad afterwards. My doc rec. me taking Advil 1/2 hr b/f the hsg..and that helped. Well worth any discomfort to find out if your tubes are ok!!!
Good luck and don't fret! We are tough chicks!

thinking of you Becky - this is the first step to getting pregnant so no need to fear, this is a time to be excited about the next step!!! Glad they gave you the meds to make you a bit more relaxed about it. Once you have it done you will wonder what the big deal was :)
Take care and keep us posted on the test on thursday!!!

Thank you all for thinking of me. I am not nervous right now but I know I will be tomorrow. Husband is coming with me although I know he can't be in the room at least he can calm me prior to the procedure. I know that it won't even be as bad as I think. I am just a big baby! I will let you all know how it goes tomorrow.
I just wanted to give all of you who supported me before my HSG an update.
It really wasn't THAT bad but I can not lie...The cath. and the cramps from the dye smarted pretty good. I couldn't wait for it to be over. Technician says tubes looked open but I have to wait for the RE to take a look and let me know. So thanks everyone!

Well I had it done and my tube WAS open! yay! thank you ladies. My dh couldnt go inside while the procedure was going on but the doc spoke with us b4 and after. What hurt was the clamp pinching my cervix ouch! I would hate to ever go thru it again to be honest overall wasnt terrible. I def. have peace of mind now knowing it was open. :-)
