Hormone testing

August 25, 2008

I was wondering about getting our hormones tested because we have never had it done. Could that be the reason for not getting pregnant also? Is it more the male or female problem as far as hormones go? I called our local clinic for the male hormone (total testosterone) to be tested and it was very expensive. Why is that? Can you get it tested for cheaper some other way? What about cervical mucus? I don't ever know how to check, but it seems to not be very much on underwear or when I wipe. Only when my cycle starts then theres a lot. My cycles are always very regular, so thats good right? We have just never been able to get pregnant the natural way. Do you know of any way to narrow the problem down or is it just going to take another 2 1/2 yrs?

hormonal testing is a simple bood testing so no need to worry.

They will take a test at day 3 and then 7 days after ovulation, which is usually day 20 or 21 to see whats going on in there and then go from there.

why is it so expensive? He has no insurance. I could probably get mine paid for.

its a female thing and your insurance should pick up the cost if your OBGYN requests it. THey dont have a ton of tests for men until they do all yours :)

First I think it would be a waste of time to obtain a male testosterone level. The first test to evaluate the male is a semen analysis. If this is normal then no further testing on the male is needed. Next, you will need to have a cycle day 3 FSH, LH, prolactin and TSH level done. Your ob/gyn can order this for you.

I called today and all I asked for was a hormone level check because I have Medicaid and I didnt thimk they would cover it if I said that I wanted it for infertility. I have had trouble in the past with my progesterone levels. I have been getting hot flashes too.
