It depends. At the beginning of your cycle called the follicular phase it is better for the progesterone to be low. After ovulation has occurred which is called the luteal phase, then the progesterone should rise. It is this rise in progesterone that women detect with basal body temperature charts because progesterone causes an increase in your basal body temperature. Lack of progesterone may be diagnosed with a blood test on day 21 of the cycle. In general, a progesterone greater than 12 in the luteal phase is good, less than that is concerning.
