High Blood Pressure and TTC

March 24, 2008

What effect does having high blood pressure present in TTC? Does it make it harder?

Also, does it make for a difficult pregnancy?

Took my blood pressure for the fun of it yesterday and it was VERY high. 191 over 122. Seeing my doctor tomorrow...

Oh, I'm only 22 years old, so I have no idea why this is happening...

Is it possible that this high blood presure could be caused by pregnancy? I know... a little far fetched... just trying to make myself feel better about it.

Hey wannabe,

Dont mean to scare u..But yes 191/122 is super high and u have to get it under control before even starting to TTC. Ur doing the right thing talking to a Dr ASAP. If i were u, I would go to the ER immediately.

I had similar problem, mine was around 137/95 or so and was due to extreme work stress and I quit and it went away almost immediately.

Uncontrolled high BP can lead to spontaneous M/Cs and a lot of risks during pregnancy for both u and the baby.

No. Pregnancy induced Hypertension occurs only well into the 2nd Tri or 3rd Tri, but there was another user on the site who had a M/C at 9 weeks coz of high BP. But that could well be chronic Hypertension..

Ill be praying this is just temperory and probably a wrong reading.

Good Luck

Yes, the recommendation for such an elevation would be to go to an ER immediately...

Thanks. I went to my appointment today and discussed this with the doctor. She said there are a lot of reasons for a freak high reading like this, but that I need to monitor it.

My BP this afternoon was 149 over 94, which is much better than on Sunday, but still high. She told me that I need to go back in 2 weeks for it to be checked again. If it's high, she'll put me on something to help, but she didn't say I need to stop TTC. I'm going to take a break for a month or so anyway... if it happens, great. If not, oh well.

I wouldn't be able to handle a miscarriage after all this time TTC (since October, 2005).

Update:

I went to the doctor yesterday for my 2 week blood pressure check and it was a little higher than 2 weeks ago, but not much. The nurse said the bottom number was too high, so I should relax for 5 minutes and she'd check it again. 5 minutes later, it was higher than the first time. I left. Last reading was 151 over 98.

My doctor called this morning and is putting me on a water pill (can't remember the name) and I have to go have blood drawn in a week and another BP Check in 2 weeks.

Is it safe to take a water pill while TTC?

April 14, 2008

Hey Wannabe, I dont know about Waterpill and TTC and preggo. I do know that ACE inhibitors are not at all safe during pregnancy and TTC. I have read abt women taking Beta Blockers and I remember my Dr mentioning that to me 2 years ago..But hey check this post, u can also msg Jensateacher..I think shes also taking some meds for hypertension. Good luck but always let ur Dr know abt TTC before she puts u on meds.

I love that they tell you you're blood pressure is reading very high...so "relax" and we'll try it again. If you're anything like me, you stressed out even more, which sent your bp back up.

Stress really can mess up your BP. I'm normally quite low, but, in the couple of months after my husband and I bought our first house, my stomach went to hell. When I went to the doctor, my bp had skyrocketed. Eventually, I got used to the idea of homeownership, and my BP fell back to normal.

So, with that being said, TTC can be very stressful. Perhaps you should focus on relaxation (I know, they always tell you that, but with high BP, it's essential). Try yoga, meditation, or getting a few massages. Take care of yourself so your body can take care of a growing baby.

Yeah, I'm mainly focusing on the blood pressure and losing some weight. Of course, TTC is still in the back of my mind, but it's not my first priority anymore.

I told my doctor that we are TTC, so I'm sure she wouldn't give me anything harmful.

My BP was really high while I had a job and TTC and overweight. I quit, lost the weight and got preggo and my BP is now super normal. What wonders lack of stress can do!! (touch wood)

April 15, 2008

I would LOVE to quit work! LOL!

April 15, 2008

But I can't. We rely on both of our incomes...

April 15, 2008

i need to go down to part time working myself and what we are doign is takin one of my checks every month and putting into savings to see how much we actually miss it - hopefully in a few months i can go to part time and then that will lessen some stress :)

April 15, 2008

That's a great idea!

Something you need to think about also is... if they are using the appropriate size BP cuff. I know when they used the smaller one my readings were far higher, but were inaccurate. But when they got the larger cuff, the reading was much more accurate and was always lower.

I have borderline to high BP- and I take a medicine called aldomet. When I was very early in pregnancy I was having bad heart palpitaions- and it was due to increased BP. I went to the doc and they increased my bp meds. and the heart palpitations went away immediately.

good luck, just get this under control so that when you get pregnant its alreayd under control- good luck

April 15, 2008

I was taking a Beta Blocker for 3 months way back in 2006. The palpitaion just got worse after taking the meds for some reason..THe general physician told me to put TTC in the back burner for 6 months. Everytime I went to the Dr during preggo, Id be so freaked out but my BP has been shockingly good like 90/60 throughout until the last 2 weeks still normal, but elevated than my normal range around 120/80..So, really stress does play a big role in all this.

Yes as Lori says get it under control before u get preggo..Thats the safest for the baby and you.
