I had an elected c section 2.6 years ago.. I went in for U/S and the OB was like we will deliver next week.. I had not dialated and the baby was not even in position because I was delivering early.. so this is my experience...
I picked first thing in the morning. My DH got into scrubs and I got an IV.. also they shave you down below I was not prepared for that.. and after all that was done, the aniestieologist(sp??) came in and explained the spinal. Like an epidural only in a different space in the spine. And I was taken to the OR and DH waitED outside the OR as I got the spinal and with in minutes could not feel anything.. you are on the operating table and kinda tilted a bit onto your side.. and thats how you stay.. then your DH will come in and sit at your head.. you do not see anything but feel lots of tugging - but no pain, I got some neck pain and thats normal.. also if you feel nausea they adjust the meds.. then the baby was out in 20 mintes.. and then they take another 30 minutes to sew you back up..
Revovery- I was in for 3 hours.. the pain was not bad, but I kept asking for more pain meds I wanted to stay ahead of the game.. I was given morphine the first day.. after I was moved into a reg room ( I had to be able to lift my legs) I rested and still felt tired but good.
I got up out of bed that night and had to pee in front of the nurses so they could take my cathetra out.. I was in the hospital for 5 days.. and when I got home I was sore, but took my vicotin for about 2 or 3 days then was fine. Good Luck, I am here if you have more questions! I will tell you I had a wonderful experience and would not deliver any other way... I am excited to hopefully get preggo again, and will definately ask for another section.
I understand why you are so nervous about your C-section. Try not to worry! I know that's easier said than done, but everything will be fine :) My sister had 2 C-Sections. The first one planned ( my niece was breech) and the second one- just this past September was an Emergency C-Sect. My sister says the same thing Caryn said- she would not deliver any other way again! She was sore for a few days- but recovered pretty quickly.
WIshing you the best!
Fran-you are right, within 2 weeks, it will all be o.k. And no, can't turn back but I won't say that I haven't had that thought :)
JFields.. Everything is gonna go fine and work out, its so exciting and frightening to bring a baby into the world, after all he will depend on you for everything, and as a moms its an instinct to to protect and care for the baby, I remember being scared too, thinking he is so safe inside me and when he gets out all will change.. and in those last 24 hours before I delivered, I was like OMG I can't do this! But you can! And everything is gonna be great! Can't wait to see pictures of baby Grady!!

i had a harder time cuz I got an infection..but that almost never happens..and even then it was not so bad.
the hardest things was stairs dont do to many for the first few days or weeks!
your family will change but it will be totaly and utterly amazing! I am so happy for you and can't wait to see pics :)and I am hear if you need to talk before the big day..I was scared to..I went in to the operating room crying like a big baby..but everyone made me so comfertable and my huby held my hand the whole time.
I am not unscared to do it angain cuz I am a baby..but i would be WAY more scared the vaginal way.and 15 of scared for a life time of joy is SO worth it
