Heat Rash question for Mommies :)

July 21, 2008

Cam has had a heat rash since last Thursday, I brought him in to the pediatrician who confirmed that and said to just let it be and apply cool wash cloth to it a few times a day and no lotions. Our home is air conditioned so he hasn't been out in the heat but now the rash is everywhere, his neck, tummy, back, arms, legs, diaper area. Any advice or suggestions on how to get rid of it? I did give him an oatmeal bath last night and haven't seen a difference today.

July 21, 2008

oh! poor little guy!

Hopefully he's not crabby and irritable because of the rash!

I don't know much about remedies for heatrash- but hopefully someone else on here does.

Good luck Sara! Rash-be-gone Cam!

July 21, 2008

Yeah not much you can do except keep him wiped with a cool cloth...possible air dry after bathing..and no lotion or ointment. Poor guy :(

July 21, 2008

Hey Sarah, How does it look like? just tiny red spots and little rough? Mine has something like that just below the neck all the way front to back. Some small area in the tummy and very little in the back. Is that what it is? BUt she doesnt seem to be uncomfortable. I thot it was alergy to the Johnson oil I applied 2 weeks ago..My house is maintained at 70 F 24/7 so I DK how she got it

July 21, 2008

i would talk to the doc again and ask him why its spreading - there are so many things that can irrate a baby's skin. At one point when my son was a couple months old the doc confirmed 3 diff kinds of rashes on him at the same time! The only way he knew they were diff is cuz he looked at the whole body with something that looked like a funnel but it was a magnifier thingy.

Most of it was just cuz i was using laundry stuff that his skin didnt like and cuz he spit up a lot and the wetness i didnt always get in the crook of his neck. Switched to Tide Free and all was well :)

July 21, 2008

Why Chels? Should it not spread? Omg, it's after 5pm and so I can't call now til the morning. He's a little fussier yesterday and today, but sleeping well. Eating maybe an ounce less every other feeding. I have not used lotions or changed laundry det or anything different since birth, so this is weird. And like Hope, our home is at a constant temp of around 70 degrees. I keep him in a light cotton onesie and at night just wrap him in the cotton miracle blanket, no pj's..just the onesie.

It looks like a bunch of red bumps and some are sort of white head looking and it feels just like sand paper all over. Last Thurs the doc looked at him and said it was a form of heat rash called crytal malaria or something but not baby acne or anything. I never asked how long it will last or should I call if it spreads. Oh and he has no fever.

July 21, 2008

ok, bath cam daily in luke warm water (no hot water) and wipe him off no moisture as it makes the heat rash worse. I wouldnt recommend putting cool wash cloth as the moisture would just make it worse. I remember seeing some powder in the store for heat rash. THat may help. But defo no moisture on the skin. may relieve it temp itching but not good to get rid of it. Hope he feels better soon. sorry typing with one hand

July 21, 2008

It's real bad Hope, it feels really bad too when you touch him. Yep I gave him a cool/warm bath tonight, no soap at all. Just soak in the water, he liked it and kept smiling, I think it felt so good for him. A nice relief, he's been fussy yesterday and today..poor lil man :(

I'm gonna call the doc tomorrow since it will be 6 days that he's had it and everything I read says to call if it doesn't go away or gets worse or spreads to the whole body after 3-4 days. They may prescribe him something? who knows, but since we're going away for a week and leaving on Sat. I need to get this taken care of now.

July 21, 2008

Poor baby..Yup a nice bath would help so so much. I am sure ur Dr will have some ointment to put on it. but yes best is to do something before yall leave. THe salty air near the beach can make heat rash worse. Its actually sweat that causes heat rash. Try putting a real thin cotton shirt. Most baby clothes are cotton but they are so thick that I dont know how the skin breathes through that.

July 21, 2008

At home he wears a thin cotton onesie, ya know one of the white ones? When we go out and if it's hot, he's been wearing a diaper only. No clothes and I've been changin his diaper ever hour too.

July 21, 2008

I was abt to say that leave him topless.. I leave mine sometime with just the diaper. Its just tooo hot here.

July 21, 2008

Yes cause it's on his thighs too!!! lol

July 22, 2008

Any better Sarah? Hugs to cam!

July 22, 2008

Sar- sorry to hear Cameron is not good, I hope the rash goes away..

Just a thought and I am sure its not it.. but could be your laundry detergent??

July 22, 2008

i thought that heat rash was just around the places that get really hot like under the arms or under little fatty rolls cuz the air doenst get to it and the sweat or whatever is in the fold and cant get out. Under the chin is a place or behind the legs.

Im sorry he is going thru this. It probably hurts you to see it then him to have it tho. I wouldnt worry about it and the doc will prob tell you to come back in so he can see it if its spreading. Poor little guy, poor good mama!!!!

July 22, 2008

Did you end up calling the doc Sarah? How is your little man doing today?

July 23, 2008

I actually brought him back in yesterday for another look since its all over his entire body now. The doc said it is def heat rash and that it isn't necessarily from heat, but from humidity. He said continue with the cool baths, no soaps, no lotions and now to apply reg baby powder or cornstarch to his body a few times a day and it'll go away. Today it looks better on his arms, legs, and back, but still bad on his tummy.

I am using the same laundry det from day one with him and no changes with formulas or anything, so it's just weird how bad he got it when our home is air conditioned, but the humidity does make sense.

July 23, 2008

yup its the sweat glands!! I got the burts bee- baby bee lotion n the body wash. its expensive lets see if it works..claims 99.9% natural...

July 23, 2008

I may try a new baby wash on him. I'm gonna look and see if someone makes an baby wash for sensitive skin. Jay has very sensitive skin too, so makes sense Cameron does too.

July 23, 2008

Burt Bees is for very sensitive skin..if ur interested u can see this link

http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&categoryId=-153

July 23, 2008

what made you think of burt bees?

July 23, 2008

Sarah I worked with a company that used Burt Bees and the produce line is great...they do have a line esp for babies!!!!! I so forgot about this produce...it is really good....

July 23, 2008

Looks good, I like what I read about the dusting powder.

July 23, 2008

my neighbor's baby had super sensi skin with similar red thingy mine has on her body. she said she used burts bee for her 1st and 2nd. Then I posted here since ive never heard of that product and kelli said she used it too. Then went online and read about 40 reviews. So, decided to try. Did so this morning tested on her legs and its just so soft and not sticky. SO, ran and got the hair and body wash as well

July 23, 2008

Where did you get it and how much was it?

July 23, 2008

Will you use the powder only after baths or on her diaper area?

July 23, 2008

I got it @ jewel osco. but their line is avble in walgreens as well..heres a link where u can find them. I paid $8.99 for the lotion and $6.99 for the head to toe body wash. I also like their bar soap for babies. Its natural too and comes a looong way.

http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/FindStores?catalogId=10051&storeId=10001&langId=-1

July 23, 2008

They have a starter kit for $13. Sample size of their baby line

July 23, 2008

No powder for the baby. Just oil n lotion.

July 23, 2008

okay, I have a walgreens a mile away, I'll go check it out. Looks good. I'm gonna get the head to toe body wash, lotion and powder.

Thanks!

July 23, 2008

call ur walgreens b4 u go..not all carry the baby line

July 23, 2008

ohhhhhhhhh, gotcha. will do :)

July 23, 2008

Great info guys...Caden has such sensitive skin. So I may be switching too! He now has some infant acne, a bad case of dermititis on his ear lobe (weird) and some heat rash!! What a mess! LOL!

July 23, 2008

ear lobe yup same here. went away only after hydrocort but the skins dry n pale around the ears

July 23, 2008

yeah the doc said to put 1% hydrocortisone cream on it so we will see! What a weird place for a rash!

July 23, 2008

Fran, get a jump on that heat rash, my doc suggested a cool bath or cool cloth applied a few times a day, pat dry, use either reg baby powder or reg cornstarch to rub on the heat rash 3x a day, dress in light clothes pref. cotton. Cam's is just now starting to improve after 7 days.

July 23, 2008

That's why I am getting that Burt Bees powder, it says it has cornstarch in it :)

July 23, 2008

Thanks honey!!! I will.....our poor sons and daughters with their sensitive newborn skin!!!

July 23, 2008

Fran I tried using it too..it smells sooo good

July 23, 2008

okay this stuff is hard to find. I went to 3 cvs's, 3 walgreens and finally found it at Whole Foods Market. But they are back ordered on the shampoo/body wash so all I got was the dusting powder. I dont want to use lotion on him just yet with him still having the heat rash, so I didn't buy that yet. I may go to another Whole Foods around here to see if they have the shampoo/body wash.

July 24, 2008

Im glad u atleast got the powder. Hopefully it will heal Cam's heat rash

July 24, 2008

Sarah you might want to ask the store or even a spa place to make a special order for you....just a thought!!!!

July 24, 2008

Sarah,

Try spreading Corn Starch on his body, that always helps with heat rash or diaper rashes. Hope he feels better!

July 24, 2008

be careful with the creams that the docs script for the babies, sometimes they dont tell you that you cant put it on a lot or for a long period of time. My daughter has always had what we call KP or "chicken skin" which is just karatosis - something or other but it is something that people have and cant get rid of, the Vit D in the sun helps, anywyay, they gave her cream for it when she was little and told me to be careful with it cuz using it a lot daily or for a long period of time can "thin the skin" and if you use it for too long you can actually "see thru the skin"!!! Crazy hey??? Ask the doc or the pharmacist about it if you think about it to see if thats the cream the doc gave you.

:)

July 24, 2008

I found the shampoo/body wash last night and tried it, it's nice, but the smell isn't as great as the Johnson's wash or shampoo, he doesn't have that yummy baby smell to him but if it helps his rash I'm happy
