Gonal-F injections
March 21, 2008
Hi Dr. Q,
I ovulate regularly (every 28 days) on the dot. I had one miscarriage in 07' and have done two cycles of clomid/iui. My question(s) is: I am starting Gonal-F on MOnday, will I have a greater chance at pregnancy as compared to Clomid? And does Gonal-F cause hostile cervical mucous like Clomid? Can I just go without IUI and take Gonal F (as I have no physical problems with reproductive organs etc)? Sorry for all of these questions...Thanks so much in advance!

Hi Carolyn,
The Gonal F works wonders! I got pregnant my 2nd cycle of Gonal F injectables and iui. You will have so much cm you wont know what to do with yourself! I had the same problem with hostile (NO) cm when I took clomid. And sex was not fun! I know the Gonal F will work for you! My doctor said ti give it 4-6 months and on the 2nd month we got pregnant! Good Luck to you and if you have any questions let me know! Pleae keep us posted :)

Hi Carolyn,
I used Gonal too, I have one blocked tube, and the other one not so good, but good enough, and my husband use to ejaculate at most ONLY 1 drop of semen, but the sperm was good, so, we went for the IUI and I really didn't think it would work, I was thinking about finish the 4th IUI and go for IVF... I also had problems ovulating, my eggs where so small, so there were too many different little problems that made me think that it just would not happen soon...
The first IUI we didn't use Gonal, only Clomid 3 pills a day, only got 1 normal follicle and 2 small ones, so it didn't work... The second IUI 2 big good follicles with Gonal, but where in the side where my tube is closed, so the IUI didn't work either... The 3rd IUI, I got 3 good follicles, so, IT WORKED!!!!
Now I'm 11 wks preg. and I almost don't believe it, because of all our other complications, what most worried me was the amount of semen, because it was really tiny, but for me, the Gonal worked really good.

hi keller, thank u so much for all that u told me! U answered a lot of my questions about Gonal F. I just couldn't do another round of Clomid-I didn't like it at all! I am so happy that it worked for you...others have told me that u got pregnant with Gonal F. I will keep you posted and congratulations on your pregnancy!!
Tara, I totally understand how u feel. I am really sorry that u got AF. I think u are right in regards to not focusing on getting pregnant. When I got pregnant last summer, I was not thinking about it at all nor focusing on ovulation ect. I was newly married and just enjoying myself. I think we should just enjoy ourselves and not monitor every little thing that is going on with our bodies!! I really enjoy chatting with u and please email me and let me know how u are and please, please do let me know when you get BFP!!!! Lots of HUGS
Hey ladies. I wanted to spread some hope as well. Starting my fertility journey with an RE after a year of no luck conceiving I conceived only on my 2nd attempt. I first started with 50mg of Clomid and an IUI, AF came on 10dpo, I have 2 follicles. Then my RE said she wanted to take a more aggressive approach. I was put on 100mg of Clomid and Gonal F injections. I ended up with 8 total follicles and ended up pregnant and found out 12 dpo and I also had an IUI. I found out later of course it was twins and ended up miscarrying them both. But we will have luck again I'm sure of it. I just wanted to express my opinion about Gonal F. I really think it works wonders! I myself do ovualate on my own, always have. And I also have regular cycles that are about 26 days on average. We have slight male factor but that's it. Good luck to all of us!!!!
Hi Dana,
Thanks so much for letting me know about Gonal F. I start it in April when AF starts. How are u feeling? I know u have been throught a lot lately. But, I know u will get pregnant again soon. I only wanted to be on Clomid for two cycles because I heard that it thins the uterine lining...so, I decided to take a more agressive approach w/ the Gonal F. Dana, did your RE suggest taking aspirin because of the miscarriages? I have been taking aspirin, supposedly this helps prevent blood clotting etc. BABY DUST TO YOU DANA...it will happen again soon and I hope u have a great pregnancy when it happens for you!

I will start my Gonal F injections with clomid again on my April cycle too!!! :) No my RE has never mentioned aspirin. There is a test to check if I have that blood clotting issue though that I will get on my next checkup. She hasn't mention aspirin but has mentioned hepron I think if I do have it. She doesn't seem to think I have anything other than some bad luck. I keep reading all these ladies taking baby aspirin and wondered why no one has ever mentioned it to me before. Well baby dust to you too. Maybe we'll get pregnant together on the same cycle, wouldn't that be neat! :) I'm such a cheeseball!
Dana, Have a full blood work up because I did and my doctor found that I have blood clotting and maybe that has to do with the miscarriages. Anyway, taking 81mg's of baby aspirin is healthy for anyone and it makes the blood flow smoothly without clotting. I take one a day. Ask your RE to do a full amount of tests, because it may be something as simple as taking a baby aspirin. I got AF 3/21 and am waiting for April's AF to start Gonal F. What day do you expect AF? Also, I am walking a lot outside after work to try and lower my BMI (body mass index), because supposedly walking helps the blood flow everywhere!! Plus, I gained weight and I want to be in good shape for when I am pregnant again. Maybe we will get pregnant at the same time!! We can only hope and pray!! It will happen Dana...in time and hopefully soon!
Hi Carolyn,
A friend of mine has the same blood clotting issue and they found it right away and put her on baby aspirin also and she is now 11 weeks pregnant! I know you will love the Gonal F Carolyn, it is a miracle drug! No side effects really either (with clomid I was a basket case! lol!) Good luck to you and Dana! Sending you both loads of babydust followed by some major sticky glue :)

Hi Keller! Thanks again for all the info on Gonal F. You have really given me hope in regards to that drug. I really hope that it works for me like it did for you and other people!! I wasn't a "basket case" on CLomid-but had severe headaches!! My husband was afraid of the clomid, because he thought I might go crazy! Glad to hear your friend is pregnant and taking the aspirin...It is a pretty minor thing to treat-the clotting, but I will never know 100% if that was the reason for the miscarriages. I take the baby aspirin religously every day!! I don't want to take any chances. I will keep you posted Keller when I start the Gonal F! Have a great weekend!!
Hey ladies. Well I think I will start around April 15th. But I'm very confused. When I went to see my RE on Monday she said my ovaries looked great and I could start on my April cycle. But she said my uterine wall was way to thick still which means I'm going to bleed some more. Which I started bleeding again yesterday morning. Not a whole lot but I did. No pain, don't feel like I'm on a period or anything, just bleeding. So anyways I don't know if that is going to prolong Aprils period or not. So I have no clue what to expect come April. I to didn't have any side effects from the Gonal F. But I didn't have any side effects from the Clomid either. Some headaches but nothing more. But I developed 7 follicles on my left side alone, just one little lonely one on my right. My left side is definitely my dominate side. Anyways I had such severe bloating it actually hurt. And I looked about 4 months pregnant. The Dr. and Dr. Q told me that it was normal with that many follicles. But I'm anxious, I'm very confident in getting pregnant again and quickly. I will ask the Dr. about baby aspirin. I don't want to start taking it before I get the tests ran because I don't want to interfere with anything. If that is what the problem is I would like to know of course. And why does my RE tell me treatments are blood thinners and not baby aspirin?
Hi Jen, I am still waiting for AF to arrive so that I can start the injections....probably I will get "it" Thursday! Anyway, I believe my RE is going to show me how to use the injections-he didn't mention a class!! Good luck with everything, keep me posted on what's going on with u! It's good to know that someone understands!!!!
Carolyn, i am so excited for you with your new Gonal-F journey. I never took it but from reading what the ladies have said... it sounds like a great drug. Oh, and my sis took it a few years ago and got preggo and now i have a 4 year old nephew! I'm so excited for you and your dh and Seamus and i'll be hoping for that BFP for you!!!

Gonal-F will definately increase your chances of pregnancy over clomid. A large review of studies loking at the overall chances of pregnancy with various treatments are listed below. Adding IUI will increase the chances of pregnancy, so if you are using Gonal-F, I would advise that you ddo IUI, despite the fact that the semen may be normal.
Pregnancy rates per month of trying of infertile couples with unexplained infertility:
No treatment - 1-4%
IUI only - 4%
Clomid only - 6%
Clomid IUI - 8%
Gonadotropins only (Gonal-F) - 8%
Gonadotropin and IUI - 17%
IVF - Depends on program
As you can see, adding IUI to Gonal-F will increase your chances by 10% per month.
Best of luck...
