Glucophage in and of itself is not an ovulatory induction agent. Glucophage works by decreasing the amount of sugar your liver produces, hence indirectly decreasing the amount of insulin inside one's body. Now, it is strongly believed that insulin is one of the greatest culprits behind PCOS. Hence, by decreasing the insulin, ovulatory function and normal hair growth can be restored.

As such, glucophage should be taken daily until pregnant, and even so, some REs continue glucophage through pregnancy. It is believe that glucophage for PCOS patients usually takes a good 3 months to get the ultimate response. Glucophage is poorly tolerated by some...my patients have complained to me about excessive fatigue and headaches along with bad gastric irritation (heartburn). Others, I've seen, pretty much go without any complaints.

In a nutshell, start taking glucophage as soon as you desire to get pregnant, give a few months for it's effects to kick in, and make sure your liver and kidneys are checked by your doc. Pregnancy rates can be increased if combined with Clomid

Dr I know that pcos women who take metformin usually lose some weight from taking it. When do u start to notice weight loss tho?

September 24, 2008

I've noticed that weight loss will occur RIGHT AWAY if you exercise and eat right. I started taking metformin May 2nd,(full dosage by may 30th) and I was exercising a lot and eating well. I weighed a lot, like 190 lbs and im 5'7. Now I weight 137 lbs. And I haven't even been exercising a lot since like August 29th.

If you're just taking met, from what i've found the weight loss is slower and less consistent. it usually takes at least 3 months to start noticing.

hope this helped!
