ectopic pregnancy or ovarian cyst

Just two days ago I had an ultrasound done because I have have been having severe stomach and back pain. As the tech was performing the internal ultrasound she said she thought she saw an ectopic pregnancy but needed a doctor to confirm it. The doctor did confirm it to be an ectopic pregnancy, so I was admitted to the hospital. They performed a blood pregnancy which came back negative so they then said it couldn't be an actopic pregnancy but instead it was a debris filled ovarian cyst. Is this something that is easily confused in an ultrasound. I am worried because I know that ectopic pregnancies are very dangerous.
