Dr Q- role of prometrium and estrace

July 12, 2008

ANOTHER question! Last one for the evening!

My doctor told me that I could stop taking my prometrium and estrace. I am currently 7 weeks. What EXACTLY were both medications helping with? Will anything change now that I am off these meds?

Progesterone/ Pregnancy support is especially given to pregnant women who were on either Lupron or antagonists during their cycles...They are sometimes given if there's a strong sense of need for luteal support, especially for Luteal Phase Defects

If these are the cases, usually these meds are continued until 10 wks...If this was not the case, then they can be discontinued at any time

Pardon my ignorance but what are antagonists? I was on Puregon during my IVF cycle but that was it? Should I still be taking my Prometrium and or Estrace?

Antagonists are ovulation suppressors like lupron, or bcp..think puregon is in that category..you took that first b/f stimulations right? Yes, stop taking your prometrium and estrace if they told you to. They told me to stop my progesterone right after I got my first beta..and I was never on estrace.

Congrats again!

puregon is actually an injectable gonadotropin, so if you were doing IVF, then a good idea to follow your docs orders on Prometrium and Estrase...You can read more about all of this by searching the words "advanced technologies ivf" on this site
