Dr Q... I was wondering why do u get cramps when u have AF? What are the cramps from? Also, why when u use a tampon do the cramps get worse? Well at least for me they do. I have always wanted to know the answer to this and I know that this is a good website to get the answers. Thanks so much!!

It's my understanding that you get cramps as blood passes through the tiny opening in the cervix.

It gets worse for me w/ tampons too.. I think (don't know for sure) it's because the tampon bumps up against the already tender cervix.

The blood flow has something to do with this, the spiral arteries which provide the blood you see as a period "contract" which is what you're alluding to, but primarily there's a significant release of this substance called "prostaglandins" which create much of the cramping you feel..This is why taking meds such as Ibuprofen help out the cramping so much as Ibuprofen pretty much "neutralize" the prostaglandins (tried to say this as easily as possibly)... Can't really explain the tampon issue..
