Dr. Q ladies some advice please ttc

October 17, 2007

I know I have told you some of this before but I talked to my doctors office and got some more info. I finished my clomid on the 9th, had an us on the 11th showed I had 10 follicles, 6 of which are over 10 mm. I just called them to see what the largest sizes were at the time and on my right ovary I had one 16x13x14 and on the left 14x11x7. How big do they need to be and what do you think my chances are of ovulating this month? Also, my uterine lining was 2.6 how thick does it need to be? The dr put me on 1mg of estrace twice a day for three days, do you think this is enough? I am also suppose to start taking prometrium 100mg twice a day starting this Saturday. Thank you for your help!

Hi Misty,

Follicles should be around 18-22mm in size for ovulation and prometrium should be started once ovulation has been noticed (OPKs are fine if hCG not given), and not solely on a given day. Everything looks good, you're on your way to ovulating and we're sending you some...

So if I haven't ovulated yet I should wait on starting the prometrium? I have been using the opk and haven't had a positive yet, it looks close but the lines are not the same. My cervix does seem high soft and I think open. There has been some ewcm but not a whole lot. Thank you Dr Q for your help.

Also Dr. Q I finished my clomid 10 days ago is it normal for it to take this long to ovulate?

October 19, 2007

You should ovulate soon Misty given your follicular size and this is Ok, and would wait until you're egg is out, 2-3 days after + OPK to start Prometrium but let your doc know...

Thanks Dr.Q. I talked to my dr and told her that I have not ovulated yet and she wants me to go ahead and start the prometrium tomorrow. Will this hurt my chances of conceiving if I ovulate after I start the pills?

October 19, 2007

The problem is that if the prometrium is started prior to ovulation, the cervical mucus becomes hostile towards sperm and won't allow them to get to the egg in some cases...hence better to start after ovulation to prevent any types of problems...

Hi Dr.Q I decided not to start the prometrium until I know that I have ovulated. Will you please look at my chart and give your opinion as to wether or not I may have ovulated? It looks to me like I may have O'd on cycle day 12 or cycle day 16. I took a opt on cd16 and the test line was dark but not quite as dark as the control line. Please give me your opinion. Thank you so much.

Our users can give you opinions on the chart, but please post so that they can find it, and simply start Prometrium 2-3 days after an OPK...

Hello again Dr.Q. I am going to go ahead and start taking the prometrium today although I am still unsure wether or not I have ovulated but I am on cd22 now and think that I should have already od by now. My question is if I do ovulate while taking the prometrium is there anything I can do to help the cm not be hostile? Will using preseed help or taking robitussin? Thank you for your help!

These may help a little to counteract the Progesterone effects on the cervical mucus, but be better to confirm ovulation or see if you feel Progesterone symptoms in your body (tender breasts)

Hi Dr.Q just a couple of quick questions for you. Fertility Friend is now saying that I ovulated on cd10 which is the day I went in for my us, wouldn't they have been able to detect it on the us if I had or was ovulating at that time? Looking at my chart I think I ovulated on cd15. On cd10 my largest follicle was 16 is that large enough to conceive if I did infact ovulate that day? Thank you so much Dr. you have been so helpful to me.

Hi Misty,

I think you now understand some of the fundamental problems with BBTs...They don't predict ovulation accurately unlike OPKs or even better ultrasound monitoring. BBTs are going to be better than nothing if you're not going to use OPKs or Ultrasounds because at least it does provide a gauge and helps guide a good proportion of people, but like I've always said, ultrasound monitoring results will always override a BBT results and OPKs will also if taken properly :)
