dr. Q/ important question about Lupron

August 13, 2008

I'm getting ready to start an IVF cycle, my first. I'm supposed to start Lupron on day 21 of my cycle. I'm now on day 13. I asked the doctor if it was OK to try this month even though I would start the Lupron before I knew if I conceived naturally. He said it was OK to try and that women have gotten pregnant on Lupron. They have me scheduled for the long protocol but I am wondering if I should inquire about doing the short protocol instead just in case by God's grace that I become pregnant this month, I wouldn't want to risk losing it.

I'm also turning 40 in about 6 weeks and this month my CM has been incredible for baby making for the first time in the past few years. Yesterday and today I feel and see the stretchy egg white mucous that I used to have in my 20's so I don't want to waste it. I don't know if my great CM this month is a piggyback effect from last month's failed IUI with Follistim or if its the herbs and accupuncture I have been doing.

Have you ever had a patient scheduled to do the long protocol but became pregnant and stayed pregnant?

Karen, good luck with your ivf cycle! I was put on bcp b/f lupron and told to use condoms after bcp in my ivf cycle b/c it could hurt the fetus using lupron. I hope Dr. Q can chime in on that as well!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thats a great Q Karen B-

My RE told me the same thing, if I was to become pregnant, it would be ok while on Lupron ?

I already ovualted but was not keeping track and we did not prevent.. My RE does not do the BC pills.. I think I am on a short protcol..

I am scheduled to start Lupron on Monday.. AF is Due Friday...

8/18 lupron... 8/28 Blood work, ( Beta and progesterone) and U/S then Follitism to follow

DR's/ Ladies oppinions please

My RE wanted us to prevent with condoms the first round of IVF cuz i wasnt on B/C pills and the Lupron is not good for the baby if you did get preggo before starting the stims.

The 2nd IVF i was on b/c pills for 2 weeks and no lupron so same amount of time but just diff way of surpressing the ovaries.

Found this regarding the lupron depot..I had the regular daily ones:

Lupron Depot Precautions:

Before starting Lupron Depot treatment, make sure you tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking (including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, herbal remedies, etc.). Do not take aspirin, products containing aspirin unless your doctor specifically permits this.

Inform your health care professional if you are pregnant or may be pregnant prior to starting this treatment. Pregnancy category X (Lupron Depot may cause fetal harm when given to a pregnant woman. Lupron Depot must not be given to a pregnant woman or a woman who intends to become pregnant. If a woman becomes pregnant while taking Lupron Depot, Lupron Depot must be stopped immediately and the woman given appropriate counseling).

For both men and women: Do not conceive a child (get pregnant) while taking Lupron Depot. Barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms, are recommended. Discuss with your doctor when you may safely become pregnant or conceive a child after therapy.

Do not breast feed while taking Lupron Depot.

hmm, thats odd, I wonder why both our RE's told us it would not be a problem.. I specifically asked mine.. she told me it is not an issue.. and we would make sure I was not or was at my 8/28 appointment

I assume since Lupron does not make progesterone the fetus would die any how?

August 13, 2008

If you ovulate you make the progesterone yourself so the baby wouldnt die. I thought that all the lupron did was surpress ovulation, right?

so that they were ready for the stims. It takes awhile to get into your system and start working which is why they give it to day 21 of your pevious cycle so that by the time you need it its in your body.

August 13, 2008

Hmm- Chels good point you are right It does not prevent progesterone, just suppresses ovulation.. maybe thats why it did not matter for us since she said the cycle we are doing IVF is not this one, but really my next one.. hence the expected period this month..

I start the Lupron on CD 21 ( this cycle) and will continue it along side the Follitism - then progesterone vaginal inserts .. honestly I am not going to worry about it..

August 13, 2008

naw, my RE didnt say anything until i asked if something could happen to the baby if i did in fact get preggo on that cycle. I wouldnt worry about it - soon enough you will see that BFP!! :)

Lupron did make my period late, i dont know how but i was late and i know i ovulated and it still didnt come til 5 or 6 days later. Figures, i was excited to get it and it didnt come on time!

August 13, 2008

I am praying for that BFP Chelsea as I don't have many baby making years left and this stress isn't doing my body any good either. I'm lucky that my insurance has been covering massages (a limited number of them), so I have been taking advantage of that to keep me calm. I know that you all know and understand what I am going through and it's nice to have you all here to talk to.

August 13, 2008

OOPS, this posted before I could LOL

This is right on my hospital website RE: IVF

Is Lupron safe?

There is no proof that taking Lupron when you are pregnant will increase the risk of birth defects.

August 13, 2008

karen, thats great that ins is paying and helping out with massages! How awesome!!! i went thru some accupuncture with my 1st IVF cycle and i always wondered if the money would be better spent on massages cuz they are so relaxing! I hope it works for you and you get to hold a baby in your arms very very soon!

August 14, 2008

Caryn,

Thanks for that reference. That does make me feel better about the Lupron. What hospital is that? Boston General?

Chelsea, I also am so glad they are paying for the massages but anyday now they will send me a notice that I'm over my limit for the year and then I will have to stop them due to finances. I wouldn't be able to afford both the massages and the accupuncture. So I'll keep going as long as I can. Hopefully, I can get through most of the cycle before my allotted amount of sessions runs out.

Wishing us all baby dust!!

Hi dear! I hope you have a great evening. With Caryn's help and also some other ladies on this site that are currently preggo via IVF can help you loads...Kan, Achingforbaby (she just started a post about how your hubby asked you to marry you), Kelly is preggo. Now you have Chelsharmony helping you also...all of them will help you out I just know it.

Now I was wanted to know more about IVF on the states side and Kan provided me with the site and you might want to look at it: http://www.sart.org/

August 14, 2008

Hi KarenB- Nope not Boston General

Women and Infants, Providence, RI

That is where I am receiving my fertiltiy treatments.

They "advise" not to get pregnant which I assume so it does not mess up the IVF cycle- if it should fail?

August 14, 2008

Angelfish, Hello. I did check my clinic on sart.org and in my age range, their success rate for live births per transfer is 29.6%, almost 30%, which I think is great. Nice to hear from you. Boy, you were up late last night!! I usually am too.

Caryn,

I'm a little confused about the last post where they advised you not to get pregnant. Didn't your RE also tell you it was OK if you became pregnant this cyle and that the Lupron wouldn't affect anything? I don't want to beat myself up about this because my hubby and I did try this month in the last couple days during my LH surge. I hope you don't mind me asking you this question again. Thanks Caryn!!

August 14, 2008

KarenB yes she said the Lupron would not effect the baby..

I also asked the same Q to DR Eva, I will BUMP the post to you and her answer..

August 14, 2008
