Dr. Q. can OPK pick up progestrone?

Sp

Hello! I would really appreciate your input I'm very cofused. I had postive OPK on CD13 & 14, after that it went to negative on 15 and 16. Then I tested again on CD22 and it was a very strong positive (much darker than control line) and has been positive ever since (today last test, CD28). I know you recommend to stop testing after the first positive, but I didn't know that I just joined this site yesterday. Now I'm very curious to what's going on. Could the OPK be picking up progestrone? Or hcg? I did take 2 hpts and they were both negative. If the OPK is indeed picking up hcg, shouldn't an hpt have picked it up as well? I expect my period either today or tomorrow. Thank you so much in advance.

Hi Oblivious,

Sometimes, the brain during the luteal phase (after ovulation) can "squirt" out enough LH to trigger a positive OPK, and it does this to maintain Progesterone levels (kind of a complex process, but in a nutshell is kind of what's going on) Some OPKs can pick up hCG in high enough levels. Keep us posted on the hCG and ...

But would it do that (spike or squirt) for 7 days straight? it's consistently positive no matter what time of the day I test. If there is hcg and the OPK is picking it up, wouldn't the hpt pick it up as well?

It all depends on how much your individual body produces LH, and the hpt won't necessarily pick up the LH, as it will only pick up the hCG...these we say statistically are highly sensitive (very accurate)
